Stuff to do this weekend

Altamont Fair.jpg

Ride the swing at the Altamont Fair. Don't forget your Dramamine.

Prepare yourself -- you are about to experience one of the rarest of events: an absolutely gorgeous Capital Region weekend.

If all goes as predicted this is one you're not going to want to spend in front of the television. Here's our weekly list of fun ways to spend it. As always, let us know what we may have missed.

And enjoy!

Roller Derby
The Hellions of Troy take on Coal City at Slip and Collide in Troy's Frear Park on Saturday night. Doors open at 6. Whistle at 7. Music by The Tortfeasors.

Music on the roof
Mathew Loiacono headlines tonight's Upbeat on the Roof concert on the roof of Skidmore's Tang Museum. Free.

Go dancing
The Saratoga Savoy folks are holding their monthly Diamond Dance on Saturday night in the ballroom above City Hall. Sonny and Perley's Jive Five are headlining. Free lesson at 7:30. Dance from 8 to 11:30 for $15.

All's fair
The Altamont Fair is in full swing this weekend. Admission is $12, kids under 12 get in free.

Philadelphia Orchestra
Grab a bottle of wine and a lawn chair and check out the Philadelphia Orchestra at SPAC. This weekend the orchestra performs a Broadway Pops concert tonight and an evening of music inspired by Degas on Saturday.

Party with the Celts
It's St. Patrick's Day in August on Hunter Mountain. Seven Nations, Enter the Haggis and Hair of the Dog are just of few of the bands on Tap for their Annual Celtic Festival. Saturday 11-10 and Sunday 9-9. $14 a day. Kids under 12 are free.

Trailer Jam
No, really. Vintage air stream campers and their owners are in Saratoga for their annual Vintage Trailer Jam. You can check them out at an "open house" on Saturday from 11 to 2. Free. [via]

Theater
There's still a few weeks to catch Shear Madness at Capital Rep.

Shakespeare and Company is doing both Measure for Measure and Hamlet this weekend.

Streetcar Named Desire is at Barrington Stage tonight and Saturday.

MASS MoCA Fest
Josh Ritter and Ben Kweller headline Saturday's MASS MoCA Fest -- a day-long outdoor music and art festival. Tickets are $39 in advance, $47 on Saturday and include museum admission.

Take a day trip
Spend 12 hours in fabulous Schoharie County or Bennington, Vermont

Watch a jousting match and eat a turkey leg
Take a drive and get your medieval on at the last weekend of the Sterling Renaissance Fair in Oswego. It's a couple of hours away -- but... enormous turkey legs.

See a ball game
The Tri-City Valley Cats are at home at "The Joe" tonight. They play the Hudson Valley Renegades at 7.

Floating history lesson
Drop by the U.S.S. Slater for a floating history lesson. The WWII destroyer escort docked at The Port of Albany is open for tours.

Phishing
Phish is at SPAC Sunday night. If you're going, you already have tickets. If you're not, watch out for the traffic.

Omi
This should be an awesome weekend for a drive to check out the giant outdoor sculpture at Omi.

Swim
Pool weather at last! Take a swim at one of the pools in Albany, or the Peerless or Victoria pools in Saratoga. If you're more of a beach person, try Grafton or Moreau.

We're going to be at that Mass MOCA show ... so glad the weather is looking good.

Valentine's has a good show Saturday night chock full of old CDFI friends. Also, who wants to be outside? Preseason football... would much rather watch tv this Sunday.

Round Lake's arts and crafts festival is this weekend, too.

I love the Altamont Fair. 4-H, chickens, diving pigs, fried food, demolition derby: Who could ask for more?

p h i s h

No TV? But the Premier League starts tomorrow :(

there's a demo derby on sunday at the fair.

Me and the Nikon D700 (and a bunch of different lenses) will take in the Altamont Fair this Sunday. If all goes well, the photos should be up on flickr and AOA a day or two afterward. See you there!

according to the cats' website they are out of town this weekend and come back next weekend. unless something has changed, but if the schedule is correct then that's a good thing because then I will be able to make roller derby this weekend and a cats game next weekend :D

Editors: And so it is. Sorry about that. It's fixed. Thank you.

Take a drive an hour south to check out the Yankee Clipper/Kenda Cup mountain bike race series at Windham Mountain:
http://www.windhammountainbike.com/WindhamMountainBike.com/Yankee_Clipper_+_Kenda_Cup.html

This is the only east coast stop in the national series and all types of racing will be in effect (cross country, downhill, kids races, etc) - Friday, Saturday and Sunday!

Also, Windham is slated to hold the only US stop of the mountain bike racing World Cup (finals, no less) next summer - this is a big deal in Europe that draws ten of thousands of spectators, but we all know how biking goes over in the states...

Bring your kids to Seussical Jr. at 5:30 tonight, Sat., Sun. in Washington Park. Those kids are workin' it!! Word to the wise: grab a seat in the shade!

The 6th Annual Rexleigh Mill Festival (outside of Salem) is this SATURDAY! Put on annually by members of the Mathematicians this years lineup includes capital region locals Sgt. Dunbar and the Hobo Banned, BEWARE! the Other Head of Science, Matthew Loiacono, and a collective Sub Bombin' Jam. National acts J-Live, Ed Scrader and Buildings will also be performing. Swimming, camping, and music all day! 12pm into the wee hours. For more info visit www.b3nson.net or http://www.facebook.com/event.php?eid=109604708876

there is an italian food festival at the GIG (green island gazebo) on sunday from 2-5pm. no idea who is sponsoring or cooking for it. the guy i met on the street said there will be homemade italian pastries, and i stopped listening after that.

anybody know anything about albany county not allowing goats to be within reach of humans? at the fair tonight we noticed that (again), the goats were in an area visitors couldnt actually get to - you can see them but you can't pet them. you can pet sheep, but not goats. we asked one of the guys working and he said it was a regulation in albany county that the goats have to be kept away from people. what gives?

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
