I always considered Ward Stone to be an effective, albeit iconoclastic, player in his field. That changed when it came public that his "Doctor" is an honorary degree. Res ipsa loquitor.

I no longer live in the area, but Ward Stone has always been something of a hero of mine. Thus I was shocked when I read the initial allegations. However, I always assumed someone with the title of 'wildlife pathologist' might actually have veterinary and pathologist credentials. I can understand how someone with Stone's qualifications could have gotten this job in 1969 but by the 1980s I would have hoped a relevant expert would have been place in the position and Stone could be moved to a job more suited for his temperament and skills (perhaps heading up DEC educational programs). I still hope that can be the case.
