The week ahead

The French take their pastry very seriously.

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look ahead to, or take care of this week -- from the weather (oof), to sweet and tart documentaries, to Christmas music, to pond skating.

Weather

The weather's the decided to be "interesting" this week. Here's the paraphrased forecast:

Monday: Temps falling during the day -- the morning will be warmer than the afternoon. So, what starts out as rain could be snow by the drive home. Temps ranging from upper 30s to upper 20s. And then teens in the evening.
Tuesday: Brr. Highs in the low 20s. Cloudy. Chance of snow. Night temps around 10.
Wednesday: About the same.
Thursday: Highs around 30.
Friday: Highs around 30.
Weekend: About the same thing, again. Maybe with some snow.

Bundle up.

Doc, doc, doc

+ Proctors is showing two documentaries this week -- one sweet, one tart. On Monday, there are two screenings of Kings of Pastry, a look into the intense world of a high level French pastry competition -- it scored a 90 on Rotten Tomatoes. On Thursday, there are three screenings of Joan Rivers - A Piece of Work, which follows the comedienne (and plastic surgery enthusiast) for a year -- it scored a 92 on RT. Both shows are $6.

+ Also on Thursday, The Linda is showing The Philosopher Kings. Here's a clip from the doc's blurbage:

In search of wisdom found in unlikely places, The Philosopher Kings takes us on a journey through the halls of the most prestigious colleges and universities in America to learn from the staff members who see it all and have been through it all: the custodians.

The screening is part of Honest Weight's "Food for Thought" series. It starts at 7 pm. $6

Music

west point jazz knights+ The West Point Jazz Knights have a set of big band holiday tunes lined for their show Wednesday at The Linda. It's free -- but you have to call for tickets.

+ The Empire State Youth Orchestra & Youth Choral is playing its annual string of "Melodies of Christmas" concerts at Proctors, starting Thursday evening. Tickets are $25.

+ Dweezil Zappa is playing The Egg Thursday -- and playing "with" his father "via the technological wonderment of enhanced video during live performance." Tickets start at $32.50.

+ Emo pop rockers Sparks the Rescue are at Valentine's Wednesday night. They're on the "Christmas Brings Me Down" tour -- how emo. $12 at the door

+ Locals Spaceland are playing downstairs at Valentine's Thursday at 8 pm.

To-do list

December stuff.

1. Start wrapping up the Christmas shopping.

2. Tree now, or tree next year.

2. If you're traveling for Christmas/New Year's, nail down those plans.

3. If you have skates -- go find them. The cold weather could open the possibility of pond skating later this week.

4. Got plans for New Year's Eve? It's not a bad idea to plan now.

These are a just a few things for this week. Be sure to check our "Stuff to do this weekend" post on Friday.

The Center for Disability Services C-R Center Stars unique interpretation of “A Christmas Carol” take the stage this week. The Sunday Albany Times Union selected it as one of their "Good Things to do for the Week Ahead" in the Arts section. The Stars' version of the classic will feature music, dancing, and some unique twists and will be like no other “Christmas Carol” you have ever seen.

For those of you who saw this troupe of actors from the Center for Disability Services in their August performance, you will be amazed to see how their abilities have developed even further through the professional direction of Tony Rivera. If you were unable to attend a performance in August, you will truly be surprised and delighted to witness the extraordinary talent, joy, and pride of the actors as they take the stage in this “scripted” play.
