The week ahead

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look ahead to, or take care of this week -- from the weather (a snot freezer), to Caribbean cooking, to images, to painting, to reservations...
Weather
Winter's decided to overachieve this week. The paraphrased forecast:
Monday: Really f-ing cold. Highs around 7 degrees..
Tuesday: Highs around 25, with wind chills around -5. Chance of snow.
Wednesday: High near 31 -- but there's a storm forecasted to be moving up the coast. The storm apparently has the potential to drop a lot of snow. You know the deal with these things, though -- if they stay east, we get next to nothing. If it tracks more to the west, shovels at the ready. It appears to be too early to tell what's going to happen.
Thursday: Highs in the upper 20s. Again, chance of snow.
Friday: Sunny. Highs in the lower 20s.
Weekend: About the same, but with a chance of snow.
Remember: it's all about layers.
It's Chinatown
The Palace's classic movie series is showing Chinatown Monday night. $5
Taste of the Caribbean
New World Bistro Bar chef -- and Chopped champ -- Ric Orlando will be teaching a Caribbean cooking class at Different Drummer's Kitchen at Stuyvesant Plaza Wednesday evening. On the menu: Cayman conch chowder, coconut shrimp with guava sauce, "Bajan" Barbados style chicken, peas 'n rice, a trio of plantains. The class fee is $69.
Nature in black and white
Now on display at Union Colege's Mandeville Gallery: "Of Weeds and Wildness: Nature in Black & White." The exhibit "explores a selection of subtle, nuanced, intriguing, and sometimes disquieting approaches to the natural world by artists working in the richly expressive mediums of black and white photography, printmaking, drawing, and digital works." Through March 13. Also currently on display at Union: "Echolilia."
The Jewel Thief
Time is running out to see "The Jewel Thief" at The Tang (it runs until February 27). The exhibit "explores new ways to think about and experience abstract art." The NYT's Holland Carter recently described the ensemble of works as "vibrant."
Adventures in Motion
There will be two screenings Thursday night at EMPAC related to the onedotzero_adventures in motion festival. "Wow + flutter 10" features works of motion graphics, character design, typography, and animation. "Wavelength 10" features "radical new takes in music video." $5 for each screening
Music
+ Bryan Adams -- you know, "Summer of '69" and all those songs -- is at the Troy Savings Bank Music Hall Monday night. Tickets start at $35.
+ The Lyle Lovett/John Hiatt show at The Egg Tuesday is sold out.
+ Jesse Malin is at Jillian's Tuesday night ($10 ahead, $12 at door).
Arts and Sciences
+ Author Siri Hustveldt will be giving a talk at Skidmore Thursday night on "Memoir vs. Fiction."
+ For next week: neuroscientist V.S. Ramachandran's talk at UAlbany on January 31 has been moved to the recital hall at the Performing Arts Center because of expected demand.
To-do list
1. If you're thinking about getting restaurant reservations for Valentine's Day, now's a good time to book them. You don't want to wait any longer.
2. Hold out hope for spring.

Link to Echolilia busted, here it is, the artist web site and the corresponding blog. It's a moving show, I saw it today on my way to the black&white goodness "Of Weeds and Wildness" at the Nott. I wish this father-son tale had found a bigger venue in the Capital District. There is a good series of portraits by local Union student in the same gallery. Saw "The Jewel Thief" at The Tang last week, this colorful show is free, even if you are not a fan of abstract art there is something really playful about the way it is presented (see review at Get Visual).
