Scanning reaction to the kegs and eggs riot

kegheads badgeIt's pretty much impossible to not have some sort of reaction to the kegs and eggs riot that went down in Albany over the weekend (especially after seeing the video).

Here's a scan of what people are saying today...

Note: Though it may appear so in some places, these tweets are not necessarily responses to each other. They're just highlights plucked from the Twitter stream.

Hey, everyone knows St. Patrick's Day is coming up, right?

back in the day (the '70s), each year things got progressively crazier in Plattsburgh for St. Patrick's Day. The year P'burgh looked like Albany this past Saturday, the decision was made to send all the college students home on vacation for that week. Case closed. No more mobs and destruction. Divide and conquer. Let them go home and trash their hometowns.

Except this wasn't during a break

You invite Charlie Sheen to an "Kegs and Eggs" party and look what happens....

After watching many of these videos, I find this behavior nothing less than disgusting. I've also seen several comments about having the parade while school isn't in session. I just don't see how that will help. When I had an off-campus apartment, I stayed/lived there whether school was in session or not. There are plenty of students living off-campus where school in session or not will make no difference.

This is why I moved out of Albany. Well this and the murders.

Peace and quiet in Clifton Park FTW.

@upstater - I agree with shipping them out for Spring Break like they did at Plattsburgh. I was there in the late 90s and went to "raging parties" and "partied hard" like these brats are bragging about, however... we didn't trash our town. Left it messy, yes.. but were at least smart enough to know it was probably our own cars we would be trashing. Who else would be parking in the student ghetto?

If they can't handle being here for the celebration, kick them the hell out. I thought it was bad when I'd come home to barf and urine under my stairs. This is over the top.

@anon - my point exactly. Force/institute the break during St. Patrick's week. Plattsburgh State created the break in an attempt to lower the student population of the city for St. Patrick's Day. After a few years, the "tradition" of trashing the city was broken.

Regarding the calls to make SUNY Albany "pay": That's an entirely separate issue, in my opinion. These students need to take responsibility for their own actions. This is the real world, kids. If some of the students are convicted of felonies and/or expelled from school, so be it.

So, wait, the solution to "adults" not being capable of moderating their consumption and social behavior is to alter the academic calendar? How about they get held accountable for their actions instead?

Well we have video of the responsible parties committing these destructive acts so let's get 'em, right! Oh wait, they all look exactly alike. And they all are wearing the same hat. D'oh!

@bk
suburbia is so not the answer
i would be willing to wager these kids are from suburbia
and look at what all that cooped-upedness led to

Shame on them. They disgust me thoroughly and make me embarrassed for humankind.

In better news, lots of people from the neighborhood, including students, are getting together to clean up with this Facebook event:
http://www.facebook.com/#!/event.php?eid=116977495047391.

One person wrote on the wall for the event:

"I have four seats in my car for Neighborhood Clean-Up on Friday if anyone is interested in making our student body/generation look like not-douchebags."

@bk You have no clue.
