Not for us -- for you!

Each day this week, we'll be holding drawings for some pretty terrific presents. We start today with gift certificates to New World Bistro Bar and The Spectrum.

Two winners will receive a $100 gift certificate to New World Bistro Bar -- and a third winner gets a $100 gift certificate plus passes to The Spectrum.

To enter, answer this question in the comments:

What is the spiciest thing about the Capital Region?

Maybe it's a food, maybe it's a person, maybe it's a concept -- whatever it is that puts a little zip in our little corner of the world for you.

Important: All comments must be submitted by 11:59 pm Monday (March 21, 2011) to be entered in the drawing. One entry per person, please. You must enter a valid email address (that you check regularly) with your comment. The winners will be notified via email by 5 pm on Tuesday and must respond by 5 pm on Wednesday, March 23.

Appropriately: the purple haze shrimp at New World.

The spiciest thing...

That whiff of hellfire that you get when driving south on 787 past Menands.

It stings the nostrils.

The Spiciest thing is Washington Park in the summer.

Our kitchen spice cabinet - it's overflowing with baggies and bottles of misc. spices from Honest Weight Food Coop! I guess that would actually make the bulk spice section of Honest Weight the spiciest...hmm...oh well!

Bing Bamboo Burlesque!

The spiciest thing about the capital region is Jerry Jennings' hair!

The spiciest thing about the CR is the food! Although not always hot-spicy, I love the huge variety of food found here that "spices" up my life!

All the fabulous Latin dance classes! I started learning last year through Dance Force in Rotterdam and have taken more classes through Albany Salsa, and the Albany Ballroom dance studio. Fantastic instrutors and a ton of fun! It's a great way to heat up the cold winters. :-)

Well that's easy! Roller Derby makes the capital district spicy!

Whether you love the Hellions of Troy, The Albany All Stars, the new men's league the Capital District Trauma Authority or all of the above. Roller derby has something to make everyone get a lil bit sweaty.

Roller Derby has definitely made New York's capital region spicier!

Here is to an amazing year filled with roller derby action!

the bloody mary's at mcgeary's... though it's been a while since i've had one.

I love New World AND Spectrum both. I think New World Bistro's purple haze shrimp are probably one of the spicest things about the Capital Region! But I can't handle spicy things so maybe I'm wrong...

Not to suck up too much but the green beans at New World have a wicked kick to them and rock my world.

The spiciest thing about the Capital Region for me is the Saratoga Salsa and Spice Company, my source for "Baboon Ass Gone Rabid" hot sauce.

Pumpstation beer!

I love reverse-birthday presents!

Spiciest, eh? How bout our fantastic collection of Middle Eastern & Asian restaurants in the area that can spice up any day of the week!

sriracha sauce from the asian supermarket.
so much cheaper than elsewhere it's basically free.

I don't know, the Saratoga Salsa and Spice company is pretty darn spicy!

I'm going to be pretty specific here. The thing that feels like home to me and can brighten the darkest of my days is the spicy Seafood Tapioca Tom Yum soup at Blue spice. It carried me through my first Albany winter with it's warmth and spicy kick.

The green beans at New World. They make my eyes water - but I love them.

i'd say the spiciest thing about the capital region is the choice of restaurants with cuisine from around the world - while i love the choices at new world, i'd say my latest favorite is mr. pio pio . . . .

El Loco, Chipotle Chimichangas with a Rogue Chipotle Ale.

Spicy = going to Shalimar and asking for a "10" on the spice rating for your dish!

The spiciest thing about the Capital Region is definitely the food - you just have to know where to get it (and how to ask for it). My personal favorite is the spicy chicken vindaloo at Taj Mahal in Schenectady (I live in Schenectady). The purple haze shrimp (and pizza sauce don't forget) at New World Bistro is another good one. I also enjoy the wasabi and other spicy treats available at Sushi Thai Garden (in Saratoga and in Clifton Park). I stock up on chili garlic sauce, that thankfully can be bought at any Hannaford as well as the Asian groceries. Sriracha is my condiment of choice. Spicing up my pho at Van's with Sriracha is another personal fave.

The spiciest thing? One thing that comes to mind is the combination of an artsy European movie and then walking next door to sample some wonderful cuisine...

But if that's sucking up too much, a runner up would be the myraid hot sauces and Asian cuisine with special chili sauces in the Capital District.

Yay for birthdays! My 28th birthday is on the 23rd and I so hope I can win this present! ^_^

The spiciest thing about the Capital Region is all the wonderful markets one can go to buy whatever one might desire to create delicious dishes. (Asian Markets, India Bazaar, Honest Weight etc)
But if I’m unable to cook then a stop at Sukhothai on Central Ave always gives me a fantastic and flavorful feast!

Hudson Ave is pretty spiiiccccyyyy

Diversity! Everything from food to ethnicity to neighborhoods! If you're LGBT, straight, or somewhere in between. No worries...Albany has whatever you are looking for. After all, variety is the spice of life and Albany has a bounty.

There is nothing spicier than what goes on at the State Capitol, especially these days. Arrests, affairs, money laundering, affairs, love children, affairs...not to mention the whole hooker thing. We make National news for the stuff going on down there...and it isn't because of the legislation being passed!

The hot peppers I will grow in my community garden.

The spiciest thing in the Capital Region - just might be - ME!

Spicy: Dinner at El Loco Mexican Café on a hot summer night with good friends, a hearty helping of el loco hot sauce, and margaritas—One word muy delicioso

There is nothing spicier than the electricity in the air those first few days after the snow has melted and the sun pops up to say hello for a little while. People in albany take notice and appreciate those few glorious days when we get them.

The Troy Pig Out!

Ale House wings! Spiciest and the best.

spiciest thing about the capital region? i say the debates going on on some of the local blogs. people get pretty heated over some silly things!

Gotta go with the food! ... especially the hot sauce that came with my bi bim bap at Kinnaree!

The beef patties and jerk chicken at Golden Choice A Taste of the Islands on Washington Ave. Take some home and sip with some Red Stripe, Jamaican food at it's spicy finest!

The Troy Farmers Market - adds some spice to my Saturday mornings, and offers the oppurtunity to purchase a spicy lunch, spicy pickles, spicy jam, spicy sauce, or just plain spices!

The Pad Thai I had the other night. My eyes are watering just thinking about it. Man it was good!

ok, so NWBB has some of the spiciest eclectic food in the CR, but I also think we have some great spicy Shanghai food at Ala Shanghai, and I don't think that the vindaloo at Karavelli in Latham is anything to knock either!

The purple haze shrimp at New World Bistro and Bar are by the far the spiciest and tastiest the Capital Region has to offer.

Andrew Cuomo's unabashed not-married-but-we're-sleeping-together-anyway relationship with Sandra Lee (who, ironically, is pretty un-spicy herself, if you ask me)!

The variety of the local theater scene is the spiciest thing that comes to mind - always something amazing to see!

I have to agree that the FOOD is the spiciest thing. I've never lived anywhere that had so many authentic ethnic cuisines represented. The amount of Indian/Pakistani restaurants alone is staggering, and I think each of them are delicious and have something they do better than the others. I can't wait for summer and sitting on the patio at El Mariachi II with a pitcher of their homemade sangria and Enchiladas El Mariachi. YUM.

The salsa they offer with the empanadas over at Salsa Latina. It's nice.

All of the foodie friends to be had!

The spiciest thing is the debate over whether we'll have an on time budget every year (and probably the discussions that go on in those "Three Men in a Room" meetings)!

The spiciest has to be UAlbany guys..mmm...mmm

The spiciest thing about the Capital Region are the great Indian restaurants and their green chilies that they give to you on the side. They will kill you...in a good way.

wasabi! and the millions of sushi places the capital district seems to contain that i can get it from: http://alloveralbany.com/archive/2010/05/18/how-much-sushi-is-too-much

wow! i. love. sushi.

I think the spiciest thing is something I am not equipped to try but I'm intrigued by it!

Someday, I want to go to Karavalli and have someone more daring than myself order Phaal. It's rated spicier than their vindaloo, which is the spiciest thing I know to order.

The variety of foods one can find in the area (my personal favorite being all the Indian restaurants).

Scooter Pie!

Spiciest thing?

The conversation (and odor) coming from the Washington Ave Armory bus shelter--hands down.

The spiciest thing in the Capital District? Roller Derby!!

ooh... the tie-dye pie at New World (has purple haze sauce on it). YUM.

It would totally make my birthday (today) to win this reverse birthday present!

Some of the drag queens over at Waterworks can be pretty spicy. Or maybe saucy would be a better term...

Thai Italian Love (from NWBB)

The Saratoga Salsa and Spice Co. -- if they can't light your mouth on fire, nobody can. :)

I'd have to say the regular political intrigue! Living in Albany is like having front row seats to a bad Days of our Lives/West Wing mashup.

Shalimar lunch buffet!

Kinnarree on Lark - finally a place that isn't scared to add some heat to food.

The spiciest thing in the Capital District is the NWBB's Tie Dye Pie. The spicier the habaneros, the better!

I would have to join with those who commented on the excellent variety of ethnic and other restaurants in the region. I've lived here for over three years but I feel like I have barely scratched the surface of the region's restaurant pool... plenty more new spicy delicacies to try!

Mmmhmm the food!

I could go with either some tasty spicy Mexican food from El Mariachi or Thai from Sukhotahi, either one is a spicy winner in my book.

I'm going to go the enormously cheesy route (my apologies in advance) and say my relationship with my fiance is the spiciest thing about the Capital Region.

We've been together for close to two years and our relationship still feels electric and brand new. Aside from our regular taco nights, which add some literal spice, he's the kindest, most generous, most passionate person I know, can always make me laugh and still gives me butterflies when he tells me he loves me. If that's not spicy, I don't know what is.

Brunch at Iron Gate!

Benita Zahn!

The sushi places in and around Albany

The spiciest thing in the Capital Region, food-wise, would have to be the Jerk Chicken *10 at the New World Bistro Bar. There's a lot of love in that dish and I have yet to discover anything to beat its heat.

The spiciest parts of my life in Albany are when I order the HOT salsa on my Burrito Bowl at Chipotle!

the spiciest thing? of course matt baumgartner!

The chips and salsa at El Mariachi's!

nothing spicier than sitting outside on a summer's night at one of the great restaurants who advertise on AoA and enjoying a spicy treat along with a cold, crisp glass of beer

AASRD! And anything you dare to order Thai-Spicy at Kinnaree on Lark.

The Electric City, by far.

Nothin' says spicy like the touch of my fiance's lips on mine!!

Scooter Pie after Midnight. With roller derby a close 2nd.

Ruck wings ... yuuummmm

Bob Kovachick.

Anything ordered at Zaika at the spice level of 10!

Can't decide: hot peppers from the garden, or hot wings from the Ale House? Both are hot and tasty.

The XXX hot wings at bombers.

I still get a tingle when I walk into Last Vestige to browse the stacks. So many places lack an independent record store nowadays, it pleases me to no end that the one I call home still has one (and a good one at that!).

Oh my goodness the salsa they serve at La Fiesta in Clifton Park! It is so good but so SPICY! You can only dip a little!

Oh, definitely Albany Salsa! They're great and a great way to have fun and get out during the cold winter.

Spiciest in the Capital Region would have to be Bel Cibo Fine Foods in Schenectady... they sell spicy foods, lots of spice mixes, and will even hold spice parties for you and your guests.

Spring Dosa at Parivar. Honorable mention, habanero salsa from Saratoga Spice Company on Broadway.

T. Trask's Zumba classes at Albany Ballroom

Gotta go with the purple haze shrimp with a plate of blackened green beans!

The spiciest thing in the 518 is The Ruck's wings... best wings that side of the Hudson. Even their mild is en fuego!

The new Elephant Bistro on Church Street in Canajoharie has brought a cool flavor to downtown. Take a drive and try it!

Maybe derryX's ghost chili wings?

Passion, Chili, Orange Rooibos tea at the Whistling Kettle

The spiciest thing? The wit of Doug Plummer over at the American Hotel!

I know the usual suspects are wasabi, the string beans at New World, or something from either of the Asian markets, but can whiskey be spicy? I was thinking of the applejack from Golden Harvest, or mulled cider, for that matter.

My next door neighbor, who likes to run around in all weather in just shorts, with a very hairy back--now that's spicy!

New World's jerk chicken at *9 or *10.
Also, "Client 9" starring our beloved former Governor Eliot Spitzer! Hot.

There's plenty of spice in the Capital Region. The amazing food, the great music, the culture... but the spiciest thing about Albany is easily this classic video that most AOA readers are probably familiar with at this point:

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hx_3ral3e08

Let's Have a Party Albany not only includes some spicy music, lyrics, hairstyles, and local celebrities of yore... but there's the spicy looking cake, the spicy looking hula-hoop choreography, and, well, the list goes on...

The salsa at Salsa Latina (with a little added hot sauce)

Steve Barnes and/or Daniel "Profussor" B.

Some of the thai dishes at Blue Spice! Yum!!

The spiciest thing about the Capital Region are the comment threads about bicycles and cars sharing the road.

stewart's "red hot" dogs....steamed and lovely; meat sauce and all other condiments gratis.

The bulk spices section at Honest Weight. Don't know how I'd cook without it.

Marlon "Rehd" Anderson's wardrobe!

I've eaten many spicy dishes, but recently the spiciest one was the Pla Pad Char at Kinnaree on Lark. It surpassed any of the others I've had there, including the Gob Dol Bi Bim Bab. WOW!
Next time I'm ordering Thai Iced Tea with it.

The Phaal at Karavalli (give it a try, Skye!).

Chili Colorado at Pancho's!

Curry dishes at Sukothai on Lark....and Jerry Jenning's tan :)

my homemade bloody mary's that I enjoy while doing summer yardwork. yeow!!

The NYS budget.

Oooh, tough choice. The "loco" taco sauce at El Loco springs to mind. That or Bob Kovachick.

Capital Q! (Sweet and Spicy)

Woah! I know what's the spiciest thing I've eaten here. Once I confused the dressing with spicy sauce in Karavalli, I was tearing for a long while.

Since I've lived in the capital region what has spiced up my life has got to be the Salsa dancing scene! :)

Bombers Wings.

The Latin Kings by the river on a hot summer night.

The spiciest thing in the capital district is my love life!

The ladies who hang outside of Handy Andy's corner store in my godforsaken city of Rensselaer.

As one who can't eat the heat from peppers but loves eyewatering tasty heat, I vote for anything from Whalen's Horseradish in Saratoga. Especially the horseradish dill pickles. And this time of year, nothing else clears the sinuses quite like horseradish!

Some of the delicious chowdas at Chowdafest!

That's easy: papaya salad at Kinaree.

Cafe' Nola - absolutely the best cajun food! and local music for your entertainment during dinner! www.cafenolany.org

The spiciest thing about the Capital Region is that sometimes it just flat out lacks spice. The often boring cultural void makes for a nice return after trips.

The spiciest thing in the Capital Region is my Korean mother-in-law's authentic made-from-scratch kimchi and her winter kimchi. Unbelievable.

The variety

BusPlus! Making transit spicy ;)

I am not sure about the spiciest thing in the Capital District but I do know where the best Risotto is, hands down, New World Bistro... :)

Dare I say.. Thaddeus K?

http://alloveralbany.com/archive/2011/02/22/that-zesty-kosciuszko

My fiance Brian!

My fiance Sandy.

ruck wings on a thursday kept my stomach burning all day friday

XXX hot wings @ bombers is definitely the spiciest thing.

My boyfriend. :)

Ale House Wings. Hands down....
Now, pick up the napkin and wipe the sweat dripping off your head.

The spiciest thing... my brother's jealousy over NOT having a Stewart's in Rockland County!!

The spiciest thing in the Capital Region is my mom. She has yet to find any restaurant capable of making a meal hot enough for her. She's superhuman....in a strange alien way, not a superhero way.

The variety of our community is Albany's ah-spiciest thing. All sorts of foods and festivals, events and activities, parks and preserves, and the people. Spicy isn't always about being hot...

Two words: Shirley Jackson.

Ashiana's Indian food is the spiciest thing about Albany, not because of how spicy the food is (at least the buffet is pretty tame), but because of how amazing the value is.

the blackened cajun string beans at New World. Deeeelish!!

The chicken Soup from van's Vietnamese on central...That stuff clears everything out of you when sick!

The Chilli Pakora at Curry House!
The only dish that could contend with the poppers from
Cactus Jacks.

The XXX hot wings at Bombers! :)

The heat on the Albany Police Department, including the back and forth on Crime Confidential.

that crazy brownish green sauce that tastes sorta sweet and mostly spicy and nice at miss albany diner

Clifton Park

My bf routinely points out the merits of the west coast versus here. Then he had the Dali Chicken at PF Changs, fire came out of his ears, he got this wickedly delighted smile, and proclaimed it the first TRULY spicy thing he'd eaten here. So I - thinking "yeah, yeah" - tried it and burnt a hole in my tongue. I think he's right.

Chicken Vindaloo at Shalimar!

the chili paste selection at the Asian market

Landfill

Three words:

Blackened.

Green.

Beans.

Ric Orlando!

Ric Orlando's purple haze shrimp!

The spiciest thing I've ever had in the capital region has been the xxx hot wings at bombers. I couldn't actually eat one, I just sort of tasted the sauce and almost died.

The art & music scene!

The Ray Liotta look a like, gorgeous, salesman at Lazare Kia . OMG he is gorgeous!

It has got to be getting on I-90 near the Rapp road landfill...put those windows up!

drag queens sell Cheesecake Machismo :)

@Sita: "The spiciest thing in the Capital Region is my mom.". Word.

Spiciest? Gotta be New World Bistro's blackened green beans. LOVE THEM!

It's ethinic blend of cuisine and culture. Long Live Farmers Markets!

Love spicing it up at New World Bistro in Albany. My new Favorite restaurant in the Capital District.

Across the Street Pub hot wings served at the renowned WING Night! Best Wings / Deal in town!
