And it sounds like they were once very common -- at spots like the intersection of Manning Blvd and Washington Ave in Albany. There was also a group known as the "Yanceys" that lived in the pine bush on the edge of Schenectady. This was a group of people of somewhat mysterious origins. Probably part American Indian and part African. But they did have some "gypsy" mannerisms.
