Weather

Arts and Sciences

+ The first "Saratoga Speaks" is Monday at Virgil's. This is a storytelling night modeled on the successful Front Parlor Series in Troy. 7 pm - free

+ The Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam is back at Valentine's Tuesday night. slam at 8 pm, sign-up at 7 pm - $5 / $3 for students

+ The New York State Writers Institute visiting writers series opens for the season with novelist Nicole Krauss reading at UAlbany Thursday evening. She was named to the New Yorker's "20 under 40" authors list last year. 8 pm at the Recital Hall, uptown campus - free

+ Communication designer Cheryl Heller will be giving a talk at Sage Thursday evening about design about social innovation. Heller chairs an MFA in the subject at the School of Visual Arts in New York, and is one of the founders of PopTech. 7 pm at the Opalka Gallery on the Sage Albany campus - $15 / $5 students / free for Sage students

+ The "Michael Bierut 30 Years 90 Notebooks" exhibit opens at St. Rose's Massry Gallery on Sunday, and will run through January. (The designer will be giving a talk at the school on September 30.) free

Gastropub

The Capital City Gastropub, the new restaurant from Wine Bar and Bistro on Lark owner Kevin Everleth and executive chef Jason Baker, opens Tuesday at 5 pm. The gastropub is in the former Pasquale's space at 261 New Scotland in Albany.

Lebowski

Proctors is showing The Big Lebowski Thursday night. The night also includes prizes and White Russians. (We wouldn't be surprised if people dressed up, too.) 7 pm - $9 / $6 for students

Also at Proctors: Sunday and Monday (September 26) there will be screenings of Eisenstein's Battleship Potemkin with live organ accompaniment.

Antarctica

This Friday and Saturday EMPAC will have preview performances of 69ËšS by Phantom Limb. From the blurbage: "Inspired by Sir Ernest Shackleton's harrowing expedition to Antarctica in 1914, Phantom Limb unites puppetry, dance, film, history, and photography with contemporary music to create a stunning vision of the great arctic continent--past, present, and future." The performance includes a score recorded by the Kronos Quartet. Friday and Saturday at 8 pm - $18

PearlPalooza

The second PearlPalooza festival is this Saturday on Pearl Street in downtown Albany. Two stages, one for national acts and the other for locals. Main stage acts include Company of Thieves and MUTEMATH. Starts at noon, the last act is scheduled for 7:30 pm. free

Wednesday: Holly & Evan at September in the City Art Fair

"A family-friendly concert in celebration of Saratoga Peace Week." 7 pm - free

Friday: Maceo Parker at St. Rose's Massry Center
Seriously funky.7:30 pm - $25

Friday: Comic Relief for Irene at The Egg
Ten comics in an Irene relief benefit. 8 pm - $20

A "bold" young bluegrass band from Boston. With: Rosary Beard (Matthew Carefully and Alta Mira's Hunter Sagehorn) 7 pm - $15 ahead / $17 at the door

I love that "Lebowski" has it's own heading. There's Weather, Arts & Sciences, Music, and Lebowski. Even though I've seen the film dozens of times, I still can't wait for Thursday!
