Good spots for photographing sunsets?

susnset albany nanotech 2011-11

We snapped this pic at Albany NanoTech this week. It was kind of beautiful watching the just-setting sun reflect off all that glass.

Hi, I recently moved back to Albany and I love photographing sunsets...where are some good spots in the area? Thanks so much in advance.

Have a suggestion for Maria? Please share!

It's a bit of a drive, but well worth it. Sunset Rock in the Catskills is aptly named, and has been a favorite spot for photographers, painters and poets for over a century. [Info] [Photos]

A good spot is near the EMPAC building (yeah, the one that looks like a boat!) on the RPI campus. There's a great view facing west that looks over Troy, the Hudson, and beyond.

There are some spectacular views of Albany from the other side of the river. It's a beautiful drive along I-90 heading west in the evenings (now late afternoons!) - I seem to remember that the parking lot at the Cracker Barrel in East/North Greenbush, right off the Interstate, had some really nice views of Albany.

Sometimes the location makes little difference. This shot from more than a couple of years ago was taken in the parking lot at Sam's Club in Latham.

Fair Haven, NY.

not in the Capital District, but still in New York state.

Try the Lansingburgh boat launch... it's at 123rd St., so you're looking West across the Hudson toward Peebles Island State Park. Going "uphill" from there, some of the lookouts at Oakwood Cemetary provide a nice unobstructed view as well.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
