Recycled: the Starlite Theatre

starlight theatre

With the demolition of the Starlite Theatre in Latham this week, it seemed like a good time to pull up this photo Sebastien took there a few years back. He has a good photoset of the place as it existed in 2009, decayed, performers such as Bob Hope, Sammy Davis Jr., Milton Berle and Johnny Cash just a memory. [Fox23]

That's sad!
The Starlite had good parking, air conditioning in later years and , you did not have to worry about being mugged walking to your car.
I saw Grease, Man of LaMancha, Mitzi Gaynor, Vic Damone, and his ex Dianne Caroll, Barbra Eden, Connie Francis, Wayne Newton and probably more that i have forgotten there.

My fondest memory of the Starlite was seeing my first real live concert there with my younger sister. I remember being so nervous that someone was going to set it on fire as they waved their lighters in the air in time with the music. I was 10. My grandmother took us. The performer? Debbie Gibson. TEAR IT DOWN!

What a sad case. It's very difficult to find a developer with the resources, vision, and commitment to take on a costly and risky project like St. Joe's. It's a shame that the hidebound conservatism of the neighborhood stymied the first and only realistic, pragmatic, and frankly very cool, project to come along in many years. I hope the church and the neighborhood gets one more shot, although I'm not optimistic.
