The Place Beyond the Pines
This movie you've probably never heard anything about -- The Place Beyond the Pines -- opens locally on Friday. Screenings that day:
+ Bow Tie Cinemas in Schenectady: 10:00 am, 1:10, 4:20, 7:30, 10:35
+ The Spectrum: 12:15, 3:20, 6:25, 9:30
+ The Regal Colonie Center has a 10 pm show Thursday night. And on Friday: 10:00 am, 12:20, 3:40, 7:00, 10:10.
There will also be a special screening of the film with "select cast and crew members" -- director Derek Cianfrance is expected to be there -- Thursday night at the Bow Tie. That screening is full, though -- tickets were pretty much only available to people connected with film.
Arts and sciences
Yom HaShoah
Yom HaShoah -- Holocaust Remembrance Day -- is Monday. UAlbany's Center of Jewish Studies will be marking the day with a talk by NYU historian Marion Kaplan about how Jews experienced Nazis Germany. "Using a wealth of primary sources, particularly memoirs, diaries, and letters, Kaplan discusses how the victims, especially women and families, tried to cope with Nazism and how it felt as the noose tightened around Jewish life." Kate Stoneman
Albany Law School's annual celebration of Kate Stoneman -- the first woman admitted to practice law in New York State -- is this week. Among the events: talks about international human rights, race and rights, and human rights, gender, and the law.
The future of interactivity
Tuesday at Skidmore: a program featuring four experts about "the burgeoning power of artists, programmers, and entrepreneurs to apply the tools of interaction design in creating new games, apps, artistic works and businesses." 7 pm, Filene Recital Hall - free
Frequency North
Thursday: The Frequency North series at St. Rose marks National Poetry Month with visiting poets Meg Kearney and M. Bartleby Seigel. Thursday 7:30 pm, Events and Athletics Center - free
The modern Muslim woman
Thursday: Daisy Khan -- executive director of the American Society for Muslim Advancement -- will be at St. Rose for talk titled "The Modern Muslim Woman: Balancing Western Freedoms and Islamic Culture." ASMA describes itself as "dedicated to strengthening an authentic expression of Islam based on cultural and religious harmony through interfaith collaboration, youth and women's empowerment, and arts and cultural exchange." Khan was part of the group that originally proposed a Islamic community center in lower Manhattan, which sparked much controversy and attention. Underground Railroad conference
The annual Public History Conference on the Underground Railroad Movement is Friday-Sunday. The conference is organized by the Underground Railroad History Project of the Capital Region and includes talks, workshops, and exhibits. Many of the events at Sage Colleges campuses, which is co-sponsor. various times - various prices
Kids
Peter Pan
A stage production of Peter Pan starts a six-day run at Proctors Tuesday. This production stars Cathy Rigby -- an actor (and former Olympic gymnast) who first played Peter Pan before many parents of today's kids were even born. How very Neverland. various times- $20 and up
Dinosaur Petting Zoo
Saturday at The Egg: Dinosaur Petting Zoo, an interactive dinosaur puppet show. Here's a video clip. The five-year-old version of us would have been very excited about this show. 11 am - $10 (adults in free with a kid, but the adult still needs a reserved ticket)

The David Sedaris appearance at The Egg Thursday is sold out.
Schumer
The show from stand up comic Amy Schumer at The Egg Saturday is pretty much sold out. Just a few seats remain.
Life in Color

What a week. I cannot wait for Chris Thile and Brad Melhdau! Those guys just kill it every time they play, no matter who they are playing with or what style they choose. I can only imagine that the two of them playing together will be a wild ride.

Abraham Ferraro completes his run at The Fulton Street Gallery in Troy this week, with a closing reception party for his "This Way" exhibit on Wednesday (4/10) from 6:30-8:30pm.
