Waterford Tugboat Roundup 2013
The annual Waterford Tugboat Roundup starts Friday and runs through Sunday. It's pretty much what it sounds like -- a bunch of tugboats gather in Waterford for a parade, festival, tours, and fireworks.
There's something interesting about tugs. Maybe the best way to put it is that they have character. Small and strong, they were originally used to move ships around harbors or to transport freight on barges. But their use has since diversified -- we got a tour of a tugboat in Waterford a few years back which was basically being used as a traveling vacation home.
OK, you might also say they're cute. But we would never say that to a tugboat's face. (Maybe behind it's back (stern?).)
The Tugboat Roundup starts Friday with a tugboat parade from the Port of Albany on the Hudson River (around 2:45 pm) to the Waterford waterfront (arrival starting at about 5 pm). On Saturday at the waterfront the boats will be on display, there will be kids activities and music, and then fireworks at dusk. And Sunday includes much of the same. (Here's the schedule.)
Admission is free.
