New spot for Valentine's owner

The owner of Valentine's -- Howard Glassman -- has bought the former Cagney's bar space on Central Ave with the intent to move there after Valentine's closes ahead of the Park South demolition, Steve Barnes reports. The space is right next to Pauly's, across the street from WAMC's main building, near the intersection of Central and Quail. [TU]

I remember this corner used to be very popular on the weekends about 7-8 years ago mainly as a hangout for college students going to paulys and cagneys. Back then, the cops would basically look the other way and let any person in to those bars regardless of age even though there were dozens of cops patrolling the nearby area every weekend to make sure these mainly out of town kids didn't get hurt.

Since the city cracked down on these bars, this corner has become pretty run down and basically not a great place to go to at night. It is really unfortunate that the lack of well to do college kids continuing to go to this area of town has caused this area to become devoid of police and unsafe to be in to some extent at least at night. I know first hand that it was common to say 2-3 cop cars constantly parked in front of these bars along with beat cops patrolling the streets between there and the Washington Ave bus stop that students would walk from to get to these bars back a few years ago. These days, I've rarely see cops even pass by the area when I have driven through late at night.

Hopefully, moving Valentines here will improve the area again though it shouldn't take an influx of well to do young people from colleges or the subrubs to this area in order to make sure the police are trying to keep this corner safe to go to at night.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
