Despite all appearances, next week really is Thanksgiving

It'd be hard to overstate how stoked Otto will be to run across this green expanse later today.

Sure, it was 60something degrees on Monday. The sky was blue. The sun was warm. Winter was a rumor.

But Thanksgiving is next week. And after that... December. And Christmas and... we'll let's not go too far down that road. Anyway, the signs are all around us. Five in no particular order:

1. Capital Hills -- Albany's municipal golf course -- closed for the season on Sunday. Which is to say: Capital Hills is now open for dog walking and (eventually) cross country skiing and snow shoeing.

2. In the cart of the person ahead of us in line at Hannaford yesterday -- not one, but two, enormous turkeys. Speaking of which: You're running out of time if you'd like order a fresh turkey. Example: The deadline at Honest Weight is November 20. And you'll want to get that pie order in, too.

3. The halls of malls and chain stores are being decked with inappropriately early Christmas decorations. The back corner of the Colonie Target has already been consumed by Christmas creep. Don't stand there too long -- it might consume you, as well. (And there's really no cure for a tinsel attack, you just have to let it run its course.)

4. That flatbed truck that tried to merge into our lane without looking on I-90 the other day -- stacked with piles of tied-up Christmas trees.

5. The ice skating rink at the Empire State Plaza is scheduled to open November 29, weather permitting.

Comments

You know, I was just wondering if I could take my dog out to run on a golf course, but I had no idea when "golf season" ends. Thanks!

Skating!

And at Capital Hills on Thanksgiving morning (9-11) the Mohawk & Hudson Humane Society will be there to collect donations for the animal shelter. I traditionally take my dog Mia, once an inmate of that shelter, to the golf course for a pre-holiday dinner run as an act of thanksgiving for having her in my life, thanks to the efforts of that shelter.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
