Sonic is looking at the Albany area

sonic indoor seating location rendering

The Sonics slated for Syracuse and Watertown have "a newly designed indoor dining room ideally suited for the colder climate."

The other day we saw that the Syracuse area is in line to get a bunch of Sonic locations -- you know, the drive-in fast-food restaurants. [Syracuse.com]

In the past, a bunch of people have indicated they'd like to see a Sonic here. And with Syracuse getting them -- and Sonic locations already in the Hudson Valley -- it seemed like Albany is a natural next step.

So we asked the company if anything was up here. The response we got today from Patrick Lenow, Sonic's vice president for public relations (via a company PR agency):

"There is significant demand for SONIC in upstate New York. We have successfully identified franchisees for Buffalo, Syracuse, Rochester and Watertown, making Albany the last available market in the area. We are engaged in talks with individuals that would like to bring SONIC to the Albany area, but no agreement is in place. Those interested in franchising SONIC in Albany should visit sonicfranchises.com."

Sounds like limeade might not be too far off.

The closest Sonic locations to Albany currently are Kingston (51 miles), Wappingers Falls (76 miles) Springfield, Massachusetts (77 miles).

Can't we have an In & Out Burger instead?

Love their commercials.

Yes, please!

(Still would looooooove a Chick-Fil-A, but Sonic is good too!)

It's always good to have more choices for my cholesterol-laden, fat-filled eating habits. Isn't it?

Nasty food.

I always thought this would be the perfect location. (The old L-Kens)

Things may have changed, but about 10 years ago someone I knew inquired about franchising a Sonic in the area. One of the biggest problems in doing so though, was that you had to pay for all the previous advertising done in the market. It essentially doubled the franchising fee because the corporation had been running ads in the area for years.

I had heard the same. More specifically that they were eyeing a spot along Rt 32 in Menands or Watervliet.

This would make me sooooo happy. As much as I like their food, I hate driving to Kingston to get it.

Well if we're going for cholesterol-laden, fat-filled fast food (which really is the best kind) how about a Checkers? I'd much rather have a Checkers in Albany than a Sonic.

Oh good gravy... Sonic was is one of my favorite Southern chains... so close. This can't bode well for me.

How about a Jamba Juice, Urban Outfitters or a Desigual? Us hipsters are excited about Whole Foods in the area :)

Sonic's food is overpriced and dried out. Had a burger and fries in Ft. Lauderdale that was a small portion and tasted like cardboard. Too much money in a plastic basket. It won't make it here.

I'm with Tammy...Checkers, please.

Anyone else see the building design similarities that remodeled McD's and Sonic are sharing?

Schenectady New York " I can't wait " SONIC I hope you come very Soon " Please Come very Soon ❤️🙏

I just got back from a little excursion to PA and i've got to say, the thing the CD really needs is a WAWA.

No thanks! We already have enough crappy fast food restaurants to choose from. How about something different...Chick-Fil-A. It actually serves real chicken and very kid friendly.

@ Matt on Feb 7 - the location of the old LKens is way too small - but that would be a dream come true since I live 30 seconds away haha

Years ago the owner(s) of LKens were trying to buy the brick house that sits out front, but that building's owner wouldn't budge; that brick house would surely have to go if Sonic were to open there, but even then I don't know if the space would be big enough

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
