Apples as brands
NPR has some background on the rise of "club" apples -- new varieties that are trademarked and carefully licensed to growers. (The recently-released Cornell varieties SnapDragon and Ruby Frost are being managed like this.) Says the president of one of the cooperatives of the future of apples in supermarkets: "It is going to be a world of managed brands, just like the soup aisle or the potato chip aisle or any other aisle."
