New Amsterdam State
Noted: There is yet another effort to split up New York State, this time upstate and downstate -- or "New Amsterdam" and "New York." The effort frames the contrast between the regions as one of "generally conservative values" and one of "significantly more liberal leaning in their values." [AP/Syracuse Post-Stadard]

Sorry, can't support them just for getting their geography wrong. Why would you name upstate "New Amsterdam" when that appellation applied exclusively and specifically to the island of Manhattan? We were "New Netherlands," dammit! Also, I would only support this if we made Dutch the official language.

Wait, WE have to give up "New York"?? Bullcrap. They can be the state of Manhattan. We get to be New York.

From an economic (and geographic) point of view, the best name for upstate without NYC would be "Appalachia".

Hmm. Amsterdam is known for being "significantly more liberal leaning in their valuesâ€, and yet they used that name for the Upstate portion? Surely the names are backwards.
