The week ahead

bill nye science guy 2015

We can only hope Bill Nye's bow tie will be accompanying him to UAlbany this week. (The talk is now sold out.)

Here are a few things to keep in mind, look forward to, or keep busy with this week, from the weather (glimpse of spring), to YouthFX, to Bill Nye, to novelists, to food, to music...

Weather

Here's the paraphrased forecast for this week:
Monday: Sunny and 28.
Tuesday: Sunny and 39.
Wednesday: Sunny to start, maybe some rain later in the day. Upper 40s.
Thursday: Cloudy, rainy, 55.
Friday: Cloudy, maybe some rain, 40s.
Weekend: Sunny and 40s.

A glimpse of spring.

Film and stage

Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl
Tuesday: The Performing Arts Center at UAlbany is hosting a new stage adaptation of Harriet Jacobs' 1861 autobiography Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl. Description:

Commissioned by The New York Historical Society in 2006, and developed by American Place Theatre, Incidents in the Life of a Slave Girl is a verbatim adaptation of the autobiography of Harriet Jacobs (1813-1897), an escaped slave, abolitionist, writer and educator. While illuminating in shocking fashion the traumas of slavery, particularly for women and children, the book is an inspiring tale of resilience and survival. Directed by Wynn Handman, Cherita Armstrong stars in this account of the author's seven years spent hiding out as a fugitive in "The Loophole," a crawl space in her grandmother's attic where she could neither sit nor stand, in order to protect her children in an effort to ensure their eventual freedom

There's a pre-performance discussion at 7 pm, and post-performance discussion.

Tuesday 7:30 pm - $15 / $10 students and seniors

YouthFX
Thursday: The YouthFX program has its 2015 premiere at The Spectrum. Blurbage for this newest group of films:

Among the wide range of topics the Youth FX filmmakers explored this past year were documentaries about local refugee youth, a profile of a local legend from Grand Street, a story of two girls who fall in love against the wishes of one of their fathers, an exploration of Black hairstyles, and the program's first film written, directed and starring an all Karen, Burma cast.

There's a Q&A with the filmmakers after the screening. (Last year's premiere event sold out, so if you're interested in going, it's a good idea to get tickets ahead of time.) Thursday 6:30 pm - $11 adults / $7 for students

The national tour of Broadway's Jekyll and Hyde is also going to be at Proctor's on Saturday for one show only! The tour will be ending soon, and it's been getting great reviews so far. Having missed it when it was last in the area, I'm excited to see it. (http://www.proctors.org/events/jekyll-hyde)

The Scoop
