The week ahead
Here are a few things to keep in mind, look forward to, or keep busy with this week, from the weather (very summer), to Memorial Day, to Pippin, to the Warehouse District, to art, to speakers, to music...
Weather
Here's the paraphrased forecast for this week:Monday: Cloudy and 82. Maybe a thunderstorm.
Tuesday: Sun, maybe a thunderstorm. Upper 80s.
Wednesday: Cloudy, maybe some rain and a thunderstorm, upper 80s.
Thursday: Same.
Friday: Same, but maybe sunnier.
Weekend: And so on.
Very summer.
Memorial Day
It's Monday, as you know, as a result some things will be closed. It's a federal holiday dedicated to remembering people who died while serving in the country's armed forces. There will be parades in many places around the Capital Region, including Albany -- its Memorial Day parade starts at 9 am Monday at Ontario and Central Ave and heads down to the Capitol (road closures and parking restrictions).
By the way: Memorial Day is very early this year -- May 25 -- because it's commemorated on the last Monday in May and the last day of the month is a Sunday this year.
Pippin
Tuesday-Sunday: A touring production of Pippin will be at Proctors this week. Blurbage:
The 2013 Tony Award winner for BEST MUSICAL REVIVAL is back for the first time since it thrilled audiences 40 years ago. With a beloved score by Tony nominee Stephen Schwartz (Godspell, Wicked), Pippin tells the story of a young prince on a death-defying journey to find meaning in his existence. Will he choose a happy but simple life? Or will he risk everything for a singular flash of glory.
Tuesday-Sunday various times - $20 and up
Warehouse District
Tuesday: The Rezone Albany project will be starting a week-long intensive look at the future of the Warehouse District (as mentioned) with a hands-on design workshop for the public. Wednesday and Thursday will include open studio times with the consultants working on new guidelines for the neighborhood. And their work so far will be on display Friday evening. Tuesday 6-8 pm at 981 Broadway
Fence
The latest version of the annual Fence show at the Arts Center of the Capital Region is now open for its 50th anniversary:
The Fence Show is an annual opportunity for all Arts Center members to display their work in our galleries. This year, we accepted and displayed 382 pieces, including paintings, drawing, photography, fiber arts, stained glass and sculpture. There is also a separate category for young artists in grades K-12. Julie Lohnes, Curator of Art Collections and Exhibitions at Union College, served as this year's juror. Lohnes has curated a smaller show from the Fence Show called the Fence Select, which will be on display for several weeks after the salon style show is dismantled. Best in Show and Runner-up awards will be announced at the reception on May 29th.
The exhibit will be up through June 27 in the Arts Center's first floor gallery.
Arts and sciences
RPI Commencement Colloquy
Friday: The topic of this year's Commencement Colloquy at RPI is "Resilient Leadership for a Resilient World" and the speakers are US Navy Admiral Michelle Howard, scholar Henry Louis Gates, Jr., technologist Craig Mundie (known for his work with Microsoft), and David Rubenstein, co-founder of the Carlyle Group (a big private equity firm). They'll all appear as part of a panel discussion headed up by RPI president Shirley Ann Jackson. The event is open to the public -- pre-registration is required. Friday 3:30 pm at EMPAC - free (registration required)
Chris Hedges
Friday: Journalist Chris Hedges will be at the Sanctuary for Independent Media to talk about his new book, Wages of Rebellion: The Moral Imperative of Revolt. Blurbage:
Focusing on the stories of rebels from around the world and throughout history, Hedges investigates what it takes to be a rebel in modern times. Utilizing the work of Reinhold Niebuhr, Hedges describes the motivation that guides the actions of rebels as "sublime madness"--the state of passion that causes the rebel to engage in an unavailing fight against overwhelmingly powerful and oppressive forces. For Hedges, resistance is carried out not for its success, but as a moral imperative that affirms life. Those who rise up against the odds will be those endowed with this "sublime madness."
Friday 7 pm (5:30 pm fundraising dinner) - $10 / $5 students ($75 for fundraising dinner)

To do list
1. It's the last week of May, so if you're plants aren't in the ground, now's the time.
2. This kind of lull right before summer, so it's a good time to get plans set -- or just get a jump on the some of the stuff on your summer list (before everyone else does).

Say Something!
We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.

I went to see Pippen last night. I had no idea what the show was about or what to expect but wow. The show was really fantastic!
