Best of SUNY Student Art

This year's Best of SUNY Student Art Exhibition is now on display at the State Museum. It's juried presentation of student work from across SUNY's many campuses. "The works on exhibit at the New York State Museum represent the wide range of media being studied by art students within SUNY and cover the traditional areas of drawing, painting, printmaking, ceramics, and sculpture, as well as digital imaging, photography, and mixed media installations." It's on display through October 23.

Pride

Events associated with the annual Capital Pride celebration continue this week at various venues around the region. The big pride parade and festival is this Saturday, June 11.

Nitty Gritty

Tuesday: The Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam is back at The Low Beat. Tuesday 7 pm

Cooking

Some cooking classes this week...

Fresh pasta
Tuesday: Gio Culinary Studio has a hands-on class about making hand-formed fresh pasta from scratch. "Students will learn all about egg-less fresh pasta and how to create different shapes all by hand, without the need of a pasta machine . Each pasta will be paired with it's own sauce. We will be using all scratch ingredients, along with professional and traditional techniques that can be easily duplicated at home." Tuesday 6:15 pm -- $60

Sauerkraut and fermented Salsa
Tuesday: Ellie Markovitch will be Dali Mamma in Albany leading a class about using fermentation. "I love experimenting with fermentation. I love to partner with microorganisms including bacteria and yeast to create delicious and nutritious foods." Tuesday 6 pm -- $40

Monkey bread business
Tuesday: Leah Stein is leading a class at Spoon and Whisk about making different types of monkey bread."Try sweet yeast dough rolled in butter, sugar, and cinnamon or take a crack at a savory flare with butter, garlic and parmesan cheese; we cover both recipes and more to make a perfect breakfast or snack to share with friends." Tuesday 7 pm -- $45

Chris Hardwick

Thursday: Chris Hardwick -- comedian and host of The Nerdist -- will be at The Egg for a comedy show. Thursday 7 pm -- $39.50

Murder, morals, and music

Thursday: The "Murders, Morals, and Music" film series at the Madison continues with a screening of the 1932 pre-code film The Cheat, starring Tallulah Bankhead. Thursday 7 pm - $10

Alive at Five

Thursday: The first Alive at Five of the season is in downtown Albany -- Dr. John and the Nite Trippers is headlining, with Jocamo opening. This summer's series will be at Tricentennial Park on Broadway, instead of the typical Jennings Landing location (construction on park upgrades prompted the one-summer switch). So keep an eye out for road closures and parking restrictions.

Also, if you're worried about parking, you might think about taking the bus. It's an easy location to reach via bus from a lot of different spot. See the link above for info about scoring a free bus pass for Alive at Five.

"This special evening will celebrate the life of late Jazz Pianist Lee Shaw, Albany New York's Queen of Jazz, on the anniversary of her 90th birthday. The evening will include a screening of Lee's 88 Keys, followed by a musical performance by long time Trio members Rich Syracuse, Jeff Siegel and special guest Nick Hetko, featuring the music of Lee Shaw." 7 pm -- $20 and up
