Finding the History of Your House at SCHS

schenectady county historical associationThis area has a lot of old homes, which have had many residents, who in turn have many stories.

An event at the Schenectady County Historical Society on August 13 -- "Finding the History of Your House" -- could help you uncover some of those stories.* Blurbage:

Join us and discover the resources in our library available for researching the history of your home, neighborhood, and the people who lived there. This workshop will also include time to conduct research in the library.

The event is Saturday, August 13 from 2-4 pm at the historical society's home in Schenectady (32 Washington Ave). It's free, but registration is required.

It sounds like this event is probably Schenectady County-focused (which is understandable), though we suspect some of the research techniques would be applicable to other areas. Also: other historical societies around the area have had similar events in the past -- so keep an eye out for them.

* A recent one that we came across that made us smile: A house on Manning Boulevard in Albany that we've passed hundreds of times was built by an inventor who probably produced the first car on Albany's roads.

For those living in Saratoga, the folks in the Saratoga History Room at the public library will help you do similar research including finding your house and former occupants in historical maps and records dating back to the 1850s.

We also made a contribution to the Saratoga Historical Preservation Society which got us the "year built" bronze plaque on old homes around town and also a detailed written history. A great value to support a worthy organization.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
