Picking through the Hoffman's Playland auction
What's left at the old Hoffman's Playland site in Latham is up for auction.
Collar City Auctions is running an online auction through the morning of May 15, and there's an onsite preview the morning of May 12. And you're a winning bidder, you'll have to pick the stuff up yourself.
There's all sorts of stuff in the auction lots, some things certainly evoke the old play land, others are just... stuff.
We browsed the online offerings today and here are a few things that caught our eye...
Signs
There are a bunch of signs up for auction, including a few of the large "Hoffman's Playland" clown signs. It looks like these are already attracting bidders.
Clown
There's an 8-foot wooden clown cut-out sign available. It could serve either as a marker of nostalgia or a warning to your enemies.
Humpty Dumpty
Because why not: A Humpty Dumpty statue. It already has a bid for $105 on it.
Ride tickets
There are a few lots with rolls of Hoffman's Playland ride tickets. Those might be fun to use in some way.
Shirts
There a bunch of lots with boxes of Hoffman's Playland t-shirts, including ones that say "Hoffman's Playland Staff."
Wooden crates
There are a few lots of wooden crates stamped "Hoffman's, LTD. / Latham, NY / Purveyors of Fine Woolens."
Ticket booth windows
One of the lots includes two of the old ticket booth windows.
Concession stand
Also up for auction: a concession stand, 10 feet by 15 feet with serving windows on the front. Your backyard barbecues would probably be more fun with that. (Or, more seriously, it might be good for a ball field or some place like that.)

My big question from looking over the auction listing is: Why all the ammo??

I grew up in Newtonville, and spent many an afternoon at Hoffman's. Paul Hoffman was a couple of grades ahead of me. My son, when he was not even a year would have to be distracted from seeing the Ferris Wheel, or he would cry, wanting to take a ride. Next time I am visiting Albany and drive by Hoffman's I know nostalgia will overtake my senses for a few moments , before I am jolted back to reality!
