New old hops
This week NPR's The Salt highlighted research efforts at SUNY Cobleskill to genetically engineer versions of New York-native hops that are resistant to the powdery mildew that wiped out the crop here in the 1900s. New York was once the largest producer of hops in the country.) There's been a push in recent years to increase hop production again because the popularity of the farm brewery license, which requires the use of New York-grown ingredients. [NPR]
