Factory made
This New York Times article about an effort to lower the cost of apartment construction via factory building is framed (ha) around the housing crunch in cities like San Francisco. But the (rising) cost of building new apartments also pops up in this area, and in part contributes to development skewing more high-end. And while pre-fab might not be the best fit for some of the quirkier infill sites, we wonder if there are ways for municipalities and developers and contractors to work collaboratively on the cost equation. For example: Albany has a lot of empty lots in row house streetscapes. Is there a way to design a common, cost-effective in-fill row house?
(And, for that matter, Albany already has historical(!) kit housing.) [NYT]
