Stuff to do this weekend

Gatz scene

A scene from Gatz.

Yes, we're all planning for our delicious tryptophan extravaganza on Thursday. But before you head over the river and through the woods or start prepping the turnips, have a little pre-holiday fun. You'll be more thankful if you do.

Here are a few things worth checking out this weekend. Got another plan? Let us know. We're big on sharing.

Gatz
The Great Gatsby comes to life in a low rent office building. Elevator Repair Service, one of NYC's best-known performance art groups brings the highly acclaimed show to EMPAC this weekend. It starts at 3 pm and it's long (6.5 hours). Tickets are $25 (dinner's included).

Music
SF jam band Tea Leaf Green pitch their tent at Revolution Hall tonight. Sarah Pedenotti's band, Railbird, is holding their CD release party at Rev Hall on Saturday night. Will she be singing about riding the bus?

Star Gazing
It's the last Friday until February to go star gazing at RPI. If the night sky is clear the Hirsch
Observatory
is open to the public tonight. You can check out the stars tonight from 8-10.

A River of Drone
If you haven't checked out the non-traditional sounds of The Sonic Arts Collective, you'll have plenty of opportunity this weekend. They're celebrating a year of bringing avant garde music to the Capital Region by... bringing 12 hours of avant garde d music to the Capital Region. They're holding a marathon concert -- A River of Drone -- from noon to midnight on Saturday at Lark Street's Upstate Artists Guild. Not sure if you'll like it? The whole thing is free, so it's a good chance to try something new and see if you like it.

Art Night
The Electric City is open late for Schenectady Art Night Friday night. It's the last one before the holidays and there are some neat little shops and galleries you might want to check out. If you need a snack, check out Stacy's Mom.

Thanksgiving Shopping
Winter farmers markets are open in Troy, Saratoga, Schenectady and Cohoes. There's also At The Warehouse in Albany. Who knows what cool stuff you can find to jazz up your Thanksgiving table. Bonus: the 50th person to enter At The Warehouse on Saturday will win two tickets to see Striking 12 at Cap Rep.

Coloring
The Children's Museum of Science and Technology at the Rensselaer tech park is holding a "Color Fun Lab" on Sunday. CMOST promises "cool color experiments" for kids ages 5+. It starts at 1 pm, pre-registration is required -- and it's $2 for non-members.

here's hoping a ton of folks roll up on "gatz", as i do think it will be wild, wild stuff (i am potentially biased, though) and it is too cold out to do anything else. quick caveat on the ticket pricing structure: it is $25 general public, $15 non-rensselaer students / seniors / rensselaer faculty + staff, and $10 rensselaer students. dinner will be provided by the folks from the always delicious epicurean as part of the ticket, and they will also be selling treats during the two intermissions.

Kristi has told us that the NYS Museum is having a Trunk Sale this Sunday from 12 - 5 pm. "..featuring local jewelers and other artists showcasing crafts, including handmade scarves, tile works, hand painted ornaments, ceramics, jewelry and paper crafts". Sounds great to me!

skfl: honest question, what do you mean by wild, wild? Is it some kind of participatory show? Or because it's 6.5 hours?

Let's not forget Belly Dance Superstars at the Egg tomorrow night. It's going to be an undulating, rippling, belly-melting, muffin-top-busting good time!

by "wild, wild", i mean the fact that something that is 7.5 hours in length (including two intermissions and the dinner) can be so engaging. there will be no singing in round or participatory whatnot - you (the audience) get to sit there in the theater and just let it all wash over you...

Stephen Kellogg is playing at The Egg on Saturday night. Great band from Northampton, MA. They played The Linda last time they were in town and rocked. $15 Students and $20 for everyone else. Oh...and he plays the Kazoo on some songs and is a boat load of fun on stage.

@ caffeine: I think the Trunk Show you are referring to is actually at the Albany Institute of History and Art on Sunday December 14. While it sounds like a great event, we still have a bit to wait.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.

Albany tightened its rules for shoveling snowy sidewalks last winter -- so how'd that work out?

If winter ever gets its act together and drops more snow on us, there will be sidewalks to shovel. And shortly after that, Albany will... (more)
