Stuff to do this weekend

I need that record.jpg

Brendan Toller's film about the demise of independent record shops is coming to The Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy .

Sure there's shopping and wrapping and decorating, but there's room for a little fun in between. Ahhh...but what to do? Here's what we're thinking about checking out this weekend.

Got another idea? Pass it along.

Walk
Tis the weekend for holiday walks. Bundle up and head out to Lark Street for a1st Friday stroll in Albany. The Hudson Winter Walk is Saturday. Sunday is the Troy Victorian Stroll.

Shop
Skip the mall and check out the Grand Street Arts Center's Craftstravaganza. It's a
mobile craft festival filled with locally made goodies. This week you'll find it at the Troy Farmers Market on Saturday and at the Troy YWCA on First Street as part of Sunday's Victorian Stroll. Also, At The Warehouse in Albany has local crafters and artisans every Saturday and Sunday from from 10 to 3.

Continuous City
The latest EMPAC presentation. In this multimedia piece by a group called The Builders Association actors, laptops and video screens combine to tell a story of the effects of technology on human interaction. Tonight at 8 PM $15

I Need That Record
Indie filmmaker Brendan Toller will be at the Sanctuary for Independent Media in Troy for a screening of his new film "I Need That Record." Toller made the film about the demise of independent record stores after his own favorite store closed. Here's more about Toller and the film.

Rollerderby
The Hellions of Troy battle the Green Mountain Derby Dames this Sunday in Queensbury.

Swing
The Dance Flurry folks are hosting their 1st Friday swing dance tonight at The Albany Elks Lodge on South Allen. There's a beginner lesson at 7:30, the dance starts at 8:30. $15 includes the lesson.

Winterfest
We're not the biggest fans of winter here at AOA, but if it always came with apple cider donuts from Indian Ladder Farms, we might be able to warm up to it. Indian Ladder is celebrating Winterfest on Sunday from noon to 4 with cider, hot chocolate, music, hayrides and mmmmm... apple cider donuts.

Tree Lighting
No, you can't ice skate at Empire Plaza, but yes Virgina, there will be a Christmas tree. They're lighting it on Sunday night, complete with a big fireworks display. The celebration starts at noon with crafts, storytelling and a holiday marketplace.

Bumpuses and Mimosa's
This week's "Movies and Mimosas" flick at the Bow Tie Cinema in Schenectady is "A Christmas Story." $5 for the movie and $2 mimosa's.

The Aœde Consort is presenting the world premiere of The Joseph Triptych, a new work by local composer and organist Thomas F. Savoy. The concert will also feature the work of early-seventeenth-century composer Orlando Gibbons. The show is at St. Patrick's Church in Watervliet (map), Saturday night at 7:00pm. A pre-concert talk with the composer will be at 6:15pm. Suggested donation is $20.

(Full disclosure: I'm performing in The Joseph Triptych as a guest of Aœde in this concert.)

Bring your kids to the town of Schoharie on Saturday and participate in the fruit cake toss at the Old Stone Fort... plus a zillion other folksie-small-town stuff.

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.
