Stuff to do this weekend

A Christmas Story.jpg

Don't do it! There are more interesting things to do this weekend.

Brrr.

Cabin fever setting in. Glued to couch. Must get up. Find fresh air.

Need. Stuff. To. Do.

Here's the list of stuff that looks like fun this weekend. Let us know what we missed.

Keep warm, and have a great weekend.

1st Friday
Bundle up and check out Albany's 1st Friday. There are new art openings all over town. Here's the map with details on what's happening and where. Afterward, check out the Mardi Gras Celebration at Lark Tavern with Captain Squeeze and the Zydeco Moshers. The party starts at 10. $5 . Other post- 1st Friday events include a dance party at The Fuze Box with DJ Modern Primitive.

Dance
Sonny and Perley headline the Capital Swing Dance tonight at the Albany Elks club. There's a lesson at 7:30 and dancing from 8:30 to 11:30. $12 members, $15 non-members, $10 for students and seniors.

Music
It's a great weekend for Music in the Capital Region. Here are a few shows that looked good to us:

Saratoga's own Phantogram performs with Minus the Bear and Maps & Atlases tonight at 8 p.m. $18

You can catch Eric Margan & the Red Lions tonight at "Jack's Place" at The College of Saint Rose.

Barrence Whitfield & the Monkey Hips play rockabilly, roots, blues, funk and soul tonight at Positively Fourth Street with the Kyghts of Fuzz.

Positive Mental Trip has a CD release party at Valentine's tonight with Sugarproof and Synewave. 8 p.m. $5

Saturday at Bread and Jam, it's the Tern Rounders Moonlight Jamboree. 8PM. Free.

Ladies sing the blues
Phenomenal women singers perform the songs of... well... other phenomenal women singers. This Saturday night at Caffe Lena in Saratoga, Sarah Pedinotti, Mikki Bakken, the Dwyer sisters, MotherJudge, Annie Rosen, Gail Sparlin, Becky Walton and Thomasina Winslow sing the music of Ma Rainey, Bessie Smith, Memphis Minnie and Sippie Wallace, as well as their own blues music. 8pm. $20 (benefit for Caffe Lena)

Hope for Haiti
The Century House in Latham is hosting a benefit for The American Red Cross and For the Love of a Child. $50 gets you hors d'ouevres, entertainment and dancing. There's also a silent auction and live auction.

Who's Bad?
The ultimate Michael Jackson tribute band makes an appearance at Northern Lights on Saturday night from 8pm to 1am. $15.

Yes! Reading
The Yes! Reading poetry folks are back for a new season. Tonight at 7:30 you can hear Aidan Thompson, Thomas Cook And Tyler Flynn Dorholt read their own works at the Social Justice Center (33 Central Ave.)

Don't cry for me Argentina
Musical theater geek alert. Broadway divas Patti Lupone and Mandy Patinkin perform in concert on Saturday night at Proctors. 8pm. $20-$65.

Go jump in a lake. And other stuff
Winterfest at Grafton Lakes State Park on Saturday includes a polar plunge in the lake, sleigh rides, ice skating, workshops, sled dogs, snow sculptures, a snowball fight... and other stuff. There's a lot going on, which may be why it starts at 5am. Yep. 5am - 4pm.

Say it right, chowdah!
Sample soups and chowders from all around the Capital Region at the 11th annual Chowderfest in Saratoga this Saturday. Bring singles -- samples are $1 a cup. And apparently there's dog chowder. It's chowder made for dogs, not from dogs. Chowderfest is part of the larger Saratoga Winterfest celebration with all kinds of fun stuff including a wine tasting event tonight ($10) a bartenders ball on Saturday ($50) and a 5K snowshoe race on Sunday ($20 to participate).

Theater
Betrayal closes this weekend at Capital Rep.

The Sterling and Francine Clark Art Institute teams up with the Williamstown Theater Festival to present "Art," the play, amidst the art in the gallery. The play raises some interesting questions about art and friendship. Seeing it at The Clark could make for some interesting post show conversation. Tonight at 7. Free, but reservations are required.

And the winner is...
Ten best picture nominees? That's the most since 1944. If you want to see them all before the Oscars, you'd better get a move on. If you missed it at the theater,"Precious" is showing at the Saratoga Film Forum tonight at 8 and Sunday at 3 ($7). You can still catch "Up in the Air," "Crazy Heart" and a whole bunch of other nominees at The Spectrum.

Buy Beer
Before the Super Bowl (or the anti-Super Bowl West Wing DVD marathon) you'll need to stock up. Save yourself some time and money and check out Capital Region beer prices before you go.

The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
