Stuff to do this weekend

stripe tulips

Yes, there are still tulips to see.

We're anticipating a bit of a soggy Tulip Fest -- at least on Saturday-- so be sure to bring your rain jacket out to Washington Park, because you don't want to miss OK Go.

What else is going on this weekend?

Lots.

After the jump, some stuff we thought looked like fun. If we missed something, let us know.

And have a great weekend.

Tulip Fest
Tulip Festival weekend kicks off at 11:30 today with a carillon concert and the annual scrubbing of the streets (at State and Lodge). Sure, some of the tulips are past peak already, but there are plenty left -- and Washington Park will be full of good music, performers, people watching, fried Oreos and funnel cake. Mmm... funnel cake. OK Go is headlining on Saturday. Be sure and check out the WEXT 518 Stage (at the Lakehouse) on Saturday with Mike Gent from the Figgs, Alta Mira, Charlie Watts Riots and Lindsy Mae. Here's the full Tulip Fest schedule.

1st Friday
Kick off Tulip Fest weekend with 1st Friday. Shops and galleries are open late all over the city. Afterward, dance to Doc Scanlon's All Star Jumpin' Jam Session with The Capital Swing folks at The Albany Elks Lodge or catch the Todd Nelson Trio at The University Club.

Canalfest
Tulips aren't the only thing we're celebrating in the CR this weekend. Waterford holds its annual Canal Fest on Saturday from 9:30 to 6. There will be music, crafts, performers, vendors and historic displays.

"World War 3 Illustrated"
The World War 3 Illustrated collective-- America's longest-running political comic book, is holding its 30th Anniversary Gala Celebration on Saturday night at 8 at The Sanctuary for Independent Media. Expect multimedia performances, puppet presentations and music.
Donations of $10 are suggested -- $5 for students and folks with lower income.

Theater
Matt & Alana and a whole bunch of other talented folks are performing in The Fantasticks
this weekend at The Not So Common players little theater at Shen. High School East in Clifton Park. The show ran for 20 years Off-Broadway, took a few years off and then came back -- we're thinking there's a reason for that. Free.

Comedy
Underground improv continues tonight with MopCo. The Mop and Bucket Company are doing shows ever Friday underground at Proctors. $15

Film
Grand Street Community Arts is hosting a screening of films from their six week summer intensive for teens. Youth FX: Film eXperience shorts will be screened tomorrow night at The Linda, followed by a reception and panel discussion with the filmmakers. Suggested donation $5 - $10.

Farmers' Markets
The markets in Schenectady (Sunday), Saratoga (Saturday) and Troy (Saturday), have
moved outdoors. Stop in and pick up some plants, fresh veggies and other good stuff.

Backstage at Proctor's
There's a wealth of cool history behind Proctor's Theater, and this Saturday morning at 10 you can learn about some of it and get a backstage tour for free.

Baby animals
Take some little humans to see some little animals. Indian Ladder Farms is hosting Baby Animal Days from 9-5 on Saturday and Sunday. $5 per child.

Selected Shorts
If you like the public radio program, you'll enjoy this. Selected Shorts is recording one of their shows tonight at Crandall Public Library in Glens Falls. One of our favorites -- S.S. host Isaiah Sheffer will read. Mia Dillon and Keir Dulla will also perform. 7 PM. $10.

Dance
The Nacre Dance Company is based in Albany and dedicated to revitalizing and reviving historic choreography. They're performing works by Isadora Duncan and others at The Egg on Saturday at 2 and 8. Proceeds will benefit the "Mothers in Need" program Capital City Rescue Mission.

Car and Truck Show
The website says "all cars, all trucks -- if it's legal, bring it." so we're not sure exactly what you're going to see at the Firebird Nation of North America's Car and Truck show-- but if cars and trucks are your thing, you might want to check it out. It's at the Albany-Saratoga Speedway on Saturday from 9-4 (the rain date is Sunday). $5 per person, $10 per carload. Proceeds benefit Saratoga Bridges.

Horses
If horses are more your thing than cars and trucks, you may want to try out the St. Clements Horse Show. The equestrian show runs all weekend on Union Avenue across from the track. 8 - 5 Friday through Sunday.

Boats
Spectators are welcome to come and check out the NYS Championship Regatta on Saturday and Sunday at Saratoga Lake. It gets going tomorrow morning around 7:30.

Make a macaroni necklace
Or something even prettier for Mom at The Albany Art Room. They're open late for 1st Friday tonight.
