William Kennedy

William Kennedy's new book -- Chango's Beads and Two-Tone Shoes -- is out, and he'll be appearing at UAlbany Monday as part of the New York State Writers Institute visiting writers series. You'll want to show up early for this one -- it'll be packed. 7:30 pm at Page Hall (downtown campus) - free

William Kennedy's Prohibition Story: The documentary about Prohibition era Albany (and gangster Legs Diamond) based on Kennedy's work is playing Monday night on WHMT at 7:30 pm.

Arts and Sciences

+ The Nitty Gritty Poetry Slam is back at Valentine's Tuesday. (Earlier: Talking with the Nitty Gritty's Dain Brammage) Sign up at 7 pm, slam at 8 pm - $5 / $3 for students

+ The Yes! Reading series continues on Tuesday night with readings and performances by Kristi Maxwell, Megan Martin and Pete Edwards. 8pm at the Social Justice Center. free

+ New Yorker writer Ian Frazier will be at UAlbany Wednesday as part of the NYS Writers Institute visiting writers series. His most recent book is Travels in Siberia, which was described in a NYT review as On the Road meets The Gulag Archipelago. 8 pm Recital Hall, PAC, uptown campus - free

+ Experimental sci-fi will be the topic of a mulit-headed event at EMPAC on Wednesday. Filmmaker Keith Sanborn will do an analysis
of Chris Marker's 1962 science fiction classic, La Jetée, and will also screen his film Operation Double Trouble and Ben Badeau's 300 Clouds. 7 pm Thursday - $6

Yo Gabba, bubbles

A couple of kids things:

+ Yo Gabba Gabba will be at Palace Wednesday for two shows Wednesdays. (If you're all "Yo Gabba what?" -- it's basically a show designed for the kids of people who grew up on indie rock. Among the bands that have guested: The Shins, The Roots, MGMT, Chromeo.) 3 pm and 6 pm - $29.50 and up

+ The "Gazillion Bubble Show" is at Proctors Saturday. "World renowned bubble scientist, artist and performer" Fan Yan does all sorts of stuff with bubbles -- including putting people in them. Dawn caught a recent preview at Proctors and says it looks like fun. 2 pm and 7 pm - $20 and up Cancelled.

Up your cupcake

Gio's Culinary Studio in Vorheesville is offering a class on "Gourmet Cupcakes from Scratch", which will show how to make vanilla and chocolate buttercake and Italian meringue butter cream, which can be used as a base for a bunch of flavors. 6:15 Thursday. $40

Hop harvest

The City Beer Hall is throwing a hop harvest festival with beers on hand from a bunch of breweries, including Southern Tier, Brown's Brewing, Chatham Brewery, JW Lee's, Weyerbacher. The menu will feature all recently-harvested and local foods. The event will also include the opportunity to infuse your beer with fresh hops. Thursday at 6pm - free

Yom Kippur

The holiest day the year for Jews -- Yom Kippur -- starts Friday evening at sundown. The solemn holiday's theme is atonement. Many Jews fast during this holiday, and then "break the fast" when the holiday ends at when it ends at the following sundown (Saturday this year).

Saturday: Keller Williams at The Egg
Kdubalicious plays for the kids. 3:30pm - $20 And for adults. 8 pm - $26 ahead / $30 day of

Saturday: Indie Fest at The Egg
The Rob Skane 3, Civilian, Museum Guards, The Sandy McKnight Fiasco and others. 7pm - $15
