Over at Vox there's a look at the costs and complications of using road salt that includes some interesting bits, among them: A civil engineering professor at the University of Washington estimates the US spends $2.3 billion on road salt for highways each year -- which in turn causes $5 billion in damage from side effects such as corrosion.
