Stuff to do this weekend

park gnomes

It's gnome hunting season in Washington Park.

OK, stop watching the clock. Really. It's not going to make 5 PM get here any faster.

Instead, kill a little valuable work time by planning a weekend full of fun.

AOA has put together a little tasting menu of yummy stuff to do in the CR this weekend. Got your own dish in mind? Great. Don't forget to share with the group please.

Happy Friday!

Troy Night Out
Looks like the rain will hold off long enough to go strolling through the Collar City for the first Troy Night Out of the spring. This month there are extra kid friendly activities like an egg hunt at RPI and crafts at The Arts Center for the Capital Region. Don't forget the TNO Official Unofficial After Party. It kicks off at 10 at Revolution Hall with White Lotus, DJ Brad Lee and The Jerks.

Music
This weeks concert picks from our friends at WEXT:
Tonight: Erin McKeown and Carrie Rodriguez are at The Egg and Brian Patneaude is at The Stockade Inn in Schenectady.
Saturday: Sirsy is at Revolution Hall with Maggie Mayday and Stepanian. Upstairs at Valentines upstairs you can catch Standard Issue Citizen. Downtairs, Society High is playing with locals, The Blisterz.

Eat Chocolate
Do some Easter shopping or just eat your way around the Washington Avenue Armory on Saturday at The 5th Annual Northeast Family Chocolate Festival. Chocolate vendors and crafters from all over the region will set up at the Armory from 10AM to 5pm. $8 for adults, $4 for kids. They're also selling $20 "value packs" good for any 4 people. Proceeds benefit The Addictions Care Center of Albany.

Movies and Mimosa
The Bow Tie Cinema's Movies and Mimosa Saturdays are back. This week's flick, Dustin Hoffman in Tootsie. It's $5 for the movie and $2 for the champagne and O.J.

Stop and smell the flowers
Sure, it's a little early for the flowers in Albany, but if you can't wait any longer, check out the Capital District Garden & Flower Show today through Sunday at Hudson Valley Community College. It's a good place to collect ideas for your own garden. There are sample gardens by landscape artists, floral designers, raffles and kids activities. $10.

Dance
The Crooked Lake House is hosting another Ballroom, Swing and Latin Dance Party tonight. There's a free lesson at 7:15 PM. Then it's $10 to dance all night. 674-3894.

On Saturday the Saratoga Savoy Center of Dance is hosting a Milonga/Tango Party at 7 Wells St. in Saratoga Springs. 8-11 PM. $10. 587-5132.

Have a few laughs
Tess' Lark Tavern is hosting The Brew Ha-Ha Comedy Showcase on Saturday night. It's a line up of local stand-up comics hosted by Greg Aidala. National comedian Clayton Fletcher will also perform. You may have seen him on "Sex and the City" or on MTV. Laughs start at 7:30. $10 (Thanks, Leigh!)

Oscar Nominated Short Films
You hear about the short films every year, but there aren't a lot of opportunities to see them in the theater. This weekend The Spectrum is screening 2009's Oscar nominated live action and animated short films from Russia, France, Japan, UK, USA, Switzerland, Denmark & Ireland.

Student Film Festival
Skidmore College is hosting a Student Short Film Festival this weekend. On Friday night student films from around the world compete for prizes. Winners are decided by audience vote. 7 p.m. at the Gannett Auditorium Free. On Saturday at 8 there's a screening of the Oscar Nominated film "The Garden" followed by a Q&A with director and Skidmore alum Scott Hamilton Kennedy.

Bollywood at The Madison
The Madison Theater has been screening Bollywood movies. The catch is, they don't seem to be subtitled, but if you speak Malayalam or Telugu--or you just love Bollywood-- you can catch "Crazy Gopalan" Saturday at 4 pm (in Malayalam) or "Koncham istam koncham kashtam" Sunday at 4 pm (in Telugu).

Gnome Hunt
The little fellas have been spotted in Washington Park. What do you do with them when you find them? Check their feet for instructions.

Make something
Spring showers might make Sunday a good day for arts and crafts. If you don't have craft supplies, or just want to get out of the house, check out The Albany Art Room on Madison Avenue.

Take the ice cream tour
Some of our favorite ice cream joints are open for the season.

Comments

We may not be NYC, But I cannot imagine how people say there is nothing to do around here.

Thanks as always AOA for having the most complete, succinct, and fun guide to the weekend!

On Sunday, the Chatham Film Club will be screening a documentary called "The Betrayal," which looks at a family "forced to emigrate from Laos after the chaos of the secret air war waged by the U.S." It's at 2 p.m. and it's $6.

Bonus: Not only was it nominated for an Oscar, but the filmmaker, Ellen Kuras, is a 518-er. She lives in nearby Greene County.

Blue Pants was found by Bob F. :) Our gnome took a hilarious trip to SUNY.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
