Stuff to do this weekend

Happy almost 4th of July.

Hey-- three day weekend! And things are looking up weather-wise. So if you haven't done it yet, it's time to make a plan.

Here's our weekend rundown of things that looked fun to us. Mix them, match them, trade them with your friends-- and by all means, if something good is missing, let us know.

Have a great weekend!

1st Friday
Kick things off tonight with Albany's 1st Friday. There's art and music all over the city. Here's the map. We're anxious to stop by Elissa Halloran and check out the featured artist --fashion designer Jill Castle from last month's Project Larkway show. We caught some of her clothes in the window this week and they're vintage awesome. Also the Albany Art Room is featuring the collages and ceramics of Lore Hauptman, a 94 year old artist whose lived a pretty extraordinary life. Here's the rest of the schedule.

Swing
Post-1st Friday check out the Capital Swing Dance at 25 North Allen Street. There's a free lesson at 7:30. $15 ($12 for members, $10 for students/seniors)

Radiohead Ballet
Yes, really. Radio and Juliette is based on Romeo and Juliette, set to the music of Radiohead and it's being performed this weekend by Ballet Maribar at Jacob's Pillow. And it looks kind of cool. Thursday through Saturday at 8. Also 2PM Saturday and Sunday. $59.50.

Steam Boats
On Saturday morning check out the parade of replica Steamboats from Troy's riverfront to Waterford. If you miss the parade, you can see the boats at the Steam Boat Meet near the Waterford Visitor's Center. There'll be music, vendors and fireworks on Saturday and Sunday.

Fireworks!
There are displays all over the Capital Region this weekend. Pick a spot with a good view and ooooo and ahhhh with the crowd.

It's the National Sport
Lots of basball this weekend:

The Saratoga Phillies are playing at home (Saratoga's East Side Recreation Field) tonight against Amsterdam. 7PM

The Valley Cats play Brooklyn at "The Joe" on Saturday (7PM) and Sunday (5PM) with fireworks after both games.

The Dutchmen play the Phillies on Sunday at 1PM

The 80's just called, they're stopping by with their bands
Break out the industrial strength mousse and get your big hair on. Tonight Poison, Def Leppard, Cheap Trick are at SPAC. Tomorrow night it's REO Speedwagon, Styx, .38 Special.

Music not from the 80's
Sean Rowe at The Backstretch Tap Room tonight at 5, followed by Franklin MiCare at 9. Free.
Tonight at 10 The Ashley Pond Band and Knotworking will play a fundraiser for the Albany Barn at Lark Tavern. $5
Diana Krall is at Tanglewood on Saturday night.

Declaration of Independence
Oh yeah, that. In the midst of the Barbecues and fireworks displays, the the Saratoga Battlefield is holding a reading of the Declaration of Independence "by a town crier, as it would have been done in 1776." Readings at 1PM and 3PM. Free.

July 4th Albany
The 4th of July celebration on the plaza gets going at 3PM Saturday. There's music all afternoon from Al Jarreau, Maria Zemantauski and others. Stick around for the fireworks.

July 4th Saratoga
The celebration starts today in Saratoga with picnics and kids activities and historic tours. Tonight there are bands on Broadway from 7-10. Tomorrow there's a parade, festival and fireworks. All the details are here. If you're in town, check out Feast Gallery show featurning Ken Ragsdale, Ann Larsen, Helen Shulman & Adam Daily.

Catch a play
Seems like a weird thing to do on a holiday weekend, but you can get great seats.
Capital Rep is showing Shear Madness and there are some good holiday deals to be scored on tickets.

Take a swim
Pools in Albany and Saratoga are open. So are the beaches at Grafton and Moreau. Don't forget the sunscreen.

Ice Cream!!!
Celebrate your independence with some ice cream.

Comments

I'll be facilitating a massive water balloon fight between two factions comprised of children aged 2-8 at my in-law's beach house on Sleepy Hollow Lake.

@Barold: After you're finished, maybe you can go to the Capitol and help the Senate settle its issues the same way.

@ Greg: Great idea!! We can fill the water balloons with something other than water, perhaps stale beer or urine.

Bike Polo Sunday 1pm Washington Park

Yes, in theory the Albany City pools are open, but this Sunday afternoon (4:30) we went to Westland Hills Park, and everything was shut up tight! This happened to us last year too, when the pool opened unusually late in the season!
Makes me think about moving to the suburbs!

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
