Stuff to do this weekend

One of Dorthea Lang's FSA photos, on display now at the NYS Museum.

Break out your winter gear and turn up the heat. No, this is not going to be a banner weekend weather-wise here in the CR.

We're thinking maybe if we just don't pay attention to it , the winter-like weather will just go away and come back in a month or so.

To help you ignore it all, here's our list of stuff to do this weekend. Pick your favs and a nice warm sweater and focus on having a good time. If we've missed any of the good stuff, let us know.

And have a great weekend.

Farm Security Administration Exhibit
A traveling exhibit of Farm Security Administration photos has landed at The New York State Museum. Curated and designed by staff at the Franklin D. Roosevelt Presidential Library and Museum in Hyde Park. This traveling exhibition features more than 150 images of America taken between 1935 and 1942 by the legendary photographic unit of the Farm Security Administration. Photographers include Dorothea Lange, Walker Evans, and Jack Delano.

Art Night Schenectady
Put on a warm coat and check out the art and music in the electric city tonight. Stop in at Robb Alley at Proctors and check out the Brian Patneaude Quartet.

The Demon Barber of Fleet Street
No, you wouldn't think the story of a guy who slits people's throats, then turns them into meat pies which he fees to unsuspecting customers, could possibly be funny -- but Stephen Sondheim's macabre musical, "Sweeny Todd" will make you laugh, and think. It will also freak you out a little. You can catch the show this weekend at Cohoes Music Hall.

Roller Derby
The Albany All Stars are back at it this weekend. Tomorrow night The Devil's Rejects take on the Midnight Stalkers in a Halloween bout. Dress up-- there's a Halloween Costume contest. Doors open at 6, whistle at 7. $10, under 12 $4.

scare the bejesus out of ourselves. Right? You can catch the Double M Haunted Hayride

SANCTORIUM
This one night exhibition of art and performance at the CAC Woodside Chapel in Troy includes life size drawings and performance art that combines speakers handmade from paper cones, cups and bottles, a de- and re-generating song of longing from a 1937 Walt Disney film. It just sounds kind of awesome to us. Saturday night from 6-9. Free but donations are appreciated.

EMPAC
It's not often you get to hear works created specifically for the venue where they're being performed. Linger over brunch with good friends. Quintessence is open for brunch again and there's always the Bloody Mary a Cafe Madison.

Comments

RPI Hockey is AWAY in Fairbanks, Alaska this weekend.

Editors: Erp! Sorry about that. That would be quite the weekend trip...

Actually, Sean Rowe is still in the UK! I believe his first US show back is next week's WEXT show at the "Exit Dome" ->

Editors: Double erp! Thanks. One more strike and we're out.

Altamont Orchards' website says the Oktoberfest is cancelled due to poor weather predicted. This includes hayrides and maze. :(

Also at Home Made Theater this weekend and next: "Curtains" from the creators of "Cabaret" and "Chicago"...apparently they only write shows that are one word and begin with a "c"
Times Union's been writing about it for weeks:

Don't forget about the Lark Street Pub Crawl benefiting the Special Olympics!
Tickets are $20 in advance, $25 day of which covers drinks and food at great Lark restaurants and pubs including: Elda’s on Lark, Hollywood Cafe, Legend’s Sports Bar, Tess’ Lark Tavern and Lionheart.

...and let's not forget Hot Cousin is playing at Jillian's tonight! They will be on between 10:30 and 11 and it's only a 5 dollar cover! An AMAZING price for pure, delicious rocking!

Saturday night is Lounge @ Quintessence. House music from Properly Chilled, Ryan Kick, and Lazer & Blazer. (was a blast last time)

You're not invited, but this weekend I'm celebrating my roommate's birthday party Saturday night. He has somehow become much more Albany famous then me, but I don't mind. We are going to have our own Oktoberfest and he's going to prove to me why people love him more.

Even with all of that - I can't wait for Saturday.

I don't see the FSA photo exhibit listed at the NYS Museum web site ... can someone confirm that is is there?

Hi Bob. It's this weekend. We've added a link to the post.

Both 8 pm on Friday + Saturday of the EMPAC hotness sold out - we just added a 6:30 show tomorrow (Saturday 10/17), so get on the good foot if you want a ticket.

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.
