Election day
It's Tuesday. While there aren't any national or state office elections this year, there are a bunch of local elections. And there are also a handful state ballot questions -- including one on whether to allow full casino gambling in New York. Don't know where to vote? Check with your county board of election website.

Nano startups
Monday: The NanoCollege's NANOvember continues with talk by NanoCollege students about startup companies with which they're involved -- the companies are focused in areas such as tooth decay and electronics. Monday 6:30 pm - free (pre-register)
Why unions?
Tuesday: Erin Johansson, from American Rights at Work / Jobs with Justice, will be at Skidmore for a talk titled "Why Unions? Reflections on the Purpose and State of Organized Labor." Tuesday 7 pm - free
Communication and information revolutions
Wednesday: UAlbany historian David Hochfelder will be at the State Museum for a talk about "the central role New York has played in the communications and information revolutions of the past two centuries" -- stretching from the postal service to nanotechnology. Othello
Thursday: The American Shakespeare Center will be at UAlbany with a production of Othello, "presented in classic Shakespearian style with actors playing multiple roles and surrounded by the audience on three sides." Sustainable meat

Wednesday: Gio Culinary Studio has a hands-on class about making homemade ravioli. "Students will learn to make delicious hand-made ravioli, sauces and fresh baked Italian bread from scratch." Wednesday 6:15 pm - $65
Hoops
The college basketball season starts this week, and UAlbany and Siena will renew their rivalry at the TU Center Friday. Both the Great Danes men's and women's teams are coming off a season in which they went to the NCAA tournament -- and the Saints men have a new coach: Jimmy Patsos.
The women's game starts at 5 pm Friday, the men at 7 pm. Tickets are $16 and up.
Looking ahead to the weekend
Zombie Film Feast
Friday and Saturday: The annual Zombie Film Feast returns to Proctors this weekend. There'a a "Descent Into Hell Zombie Prom" Friday night (8 pm - $10, 21 and over). And on Saturday is the film fest of zombie movies, in two blocks -- 11 am-5:30 pm and 5:30 pm-midnight ($15 for one block or $25 for both).
