Stuff to do this weekend

autumn leaves

The foliage season has officially begun!

Well, the first weekend of fall promises to look and feel just like the first weekend of fall should. The leaves are starting to turn and the temperatures are expected to drop. Excellent weather for all things autumnal.

Got a plan, yet? Here are a few things that looked good to us. If we missed something, let us know. And have a great weekend

TNO
Wow, really? It's already time for Troy Night Out again? Yep. The Collar City is open late with art and music. From 5 to 9 PM musicians from the Sonic Arts Collective and Casperland will perform an experimental show with music and video projections at The Arts Center for the Capital Region. When it's over stick around for The Official Unofficial TNO After Party.

Grizzly Bear
Grizzly Bear is at Skidmore College tonight. Gang Gang Dance is opening. $20

Short Play Festival

The exhibit is free and open to the public. Saturday night's events (combining science and performance art) are $15, $10 for students and seniors and $5 for the RPI community.

Oktoberfest!
Meat, beer and music at Wolff's Biergarten's Oktoberfest celebration on Saturday. Among the planned festivities: a dunk tank filled with beer. The fundraiser benefits the Veggie Mobile and The Albany Police and Fire Station. $5.

Improvise
The Mop and Bucket Company play host to Centrailia --one of NYC's best improv companies. Saturday 8PM $20

Lots of hot air
The good news is that theAdirondack Balloon Festival is going on all weekend long. The bad news is you have to get up at a godless hour of the morning to see the coolest stuff. The balloons launch between 5 and 6 AM at Floyd Bennett Memorial Airport in Queensbury. Bring a camera, it's pretty cool.

Float on
A flotilla of 17 Dutch wooden ships is docked at the Albany Yacht Club in Rensselaer this weekend. Sebastien captured a few photos earlier this week.

Wicked Albany
The authors of the book Wicked Albany: Lawlessness and Liquor in the Prohibition Era are giving a lecture on corruption, crime and conflict in the history of our fair city -- from prohibition to political machines. 2 pm Sunday at The Albany Institute of History and Art. Free.

Antiques and cider donuts
Lakeside Cider Mill in Ballston Lake is holding its annual antique show on Sunday. While you're there, have a BLT or a cider donut. Mmmm... cider donuts.

Take a walk
This is our favorite time of the year to go wandering around the Capital Region. Not sure where to go? Here are some of the spots we like best.

Bake in the outdoor oven
The Grand Street neighborhood's Betsy Mercogliano will be teaching people how to bake bread using the community outdoor oven from 1 to 4 p.m. Saturday outside 4 Wilbur St.

Vertical Mushroom Garden/Tea/movies/music
The Sanctuary for Independent Media is having an opening for Sara Worden's living sculpture "Vertical Mushroom Garden." The sculpture is meant to emphasize "the possibilities of urban food production in vertical spaces." Saturday 6 pm. The night starts with a kombucha tea party (bring your favorite cup) and continues with a screening of "Where Are You Go," which looks at a bike tour of Africa . After the film, Restys and My Survival Kit are playing. $10 donation suggested, $5 students and low income.

Road Trip!
Spend 12 hours here, or here, or here. It'll be a pretty ride and you'll be home in time for bed.

Well, those ships at the yacht club are there for a bigger event and reason (took this off the Hudson 400 web site). Unfortunately, I'll be another event further afield, the Adirondack Dance Weekend (danceflurry.org)

Saturday 10am-6pm

Albany´s Hudson 400 Commemoration - Albany Riverfront Park Celebrates Albany´s 400th Anniversary!
Albany Riverfront Park celebrates the 400th anniversary of Albany´s discovery with music, re-enactors and much more! The Hudson 400 event will pay tribute to the rich history of the great capital city on the Hudson.
Mayor Jerry Jennings and the City of Albany invite you to experience the 17th Century! Take a trip back in time to when Dutch settlers and Native American roots began creating our remarkably rich history here in Albany. Cultures were introduced, goods were traded, crafts were made and family traditions were exchanged. Take a tour of Hudson´s ship the Half-moon, watch and learn from blacksmiths, witness modern artisans performing traditional craft techniques as well as other cultural demonstrations of the time period. Enjoy delicious foods and performances throughout the day including culturally acknowledged and nationally acclaimed musical guests, dance performances and a giant drum circle at sunset. Stroll through the Riverfront Village and witness stories that are 100´s of years old come to life. For more information visit www.albanyevents.org.

The Bread Oven Workshop with Betsy has been postponed until mid or late October.

"work of a kind" is having a gallery opening at the Dead Presidents Lounge September 26, Saturday night at 8 pm, at 1092 Madison Ave, Albany, NY. The show will be running through November.

I'll be dancing my stress away at the TNO afterparty. Missing She Wants Revenge at Northern Lights tonight which is sad but found out about the show like way too late to get up there.

Scotch tasting at Revolution Hall Sunday! Oh and cigars too. If you're looking for some good scotch, or a chance to get a rare peek at the men who rarely leave your local OTB, this is the place to be.

See you there. Seriously.

Saturday is Museum Day 2009. Use this link to find a list of area museums with free admission for the day:

The Albany AIDS Walk is on Sunday in Washington Park at 2:00 p.m.!!!!

Second weekend of "The Hollow" by Agatha Christie at Albany Civic Theater on 2nd Avenue this weekend - it's a good show, despite what the somewhat cranky Times Union review earlier in the week said! Our audiences have seemed to be enjoying themselves, anyway. And it's only $15 a ticket (or 2 for $15 with government ID, or $10 with student ID.) Free coffee and tea at intermission, and an inexpensive book sale in the lobby to benefit the theater with a decent selection, too! :)

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.

All Over Albany is for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. In other words, it's for you. It's kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who can help you find out what's up. Oh, and our friends call us AOA.
