The first weekend of autumn looks like it will be kind of awesome.

Mild temperatures, mostly sunny skies. a high probability of pretty leaves and a whole mess stuff to do.

TNO
Doesn't it seem too early for Troy Night Out? But it's here. And tonight should be a great night to wander the shops and galleries of the Collar City. There's an evening farmer's Market in Monument Square, a banned book read out at 260 Broadway and a free concert by Duchess & The Afro Dub Rebels in front of the old City Hall. Don't forget the Official Unofficial TNO after party with the Goodship DJs at Daisey Baker's.

Larkfest
Lark Street's biggest party of the year kicks off tomorrow morning at 10. The music schedule includes Eli Paperboy Reed, Sirsy and The Charlie Watts Riots.

Balloonfest
The Adirondack Hot Air Balloon Festival is this weekend in Glens Falls. There are launches at the crack of dawn but if you're more of a night person, you can catch some evening launches as well. There are all sorts of other fun things going on in and around the city including a block party, classic car shows, wine tastings and activities for kids. Today through Sunday. Free.

International Festival
Troy's Little Italy is holding an International Festival on Saturday from 11 to 7 at the Marketplace on Hill Street (between Liberty and Washington). An ethnic food court, music and other entertainment from a variety of cultures.

Fall Ball
Doc Scanlon's Rhythm Boys headlines the dance party at The Arts Center of the Capital Region on Saturday night from 8 to 11. $15/$12 Members, Free lesson.

Electric City Film Festival
Six award winning locally made films , a live demo of the GE's 1920's Palaphotophone with the voices of Thomas Edison and Calvin Coolidge, a talk by filmmaker Paul Golding and a screening of the SciFi Classic Metropolis are all part of the Electric City Film Festival at Proctor's on Sunday. The events get underway at 4. $15.

Molecules in 3D
Proctors is screening "Molecules to the MAX! 3D" at 11 a.m. and 1:30 p.m. The 3D animated film was made in conjunction with RPI's Nanoscale Science and Engineering Center. $8. $7 under 17.

Wheels in the Woods
Classic Cars in Thacher Park at the Emma Treadwell Nature Center on Saturday from 10 - 4. If you're going, bring friends -- it's $6 per carload.

Dudley Night
The Dudley Observatory holds the first in a series of "observatory open houses" on Sunday night from 8-10 at Union College Observatory. Weather permitting, you'll be able to view the night sky through Union's 20"Ritchey-Chretien telescope on the roof of the Olin Center. If the sky is not clear, they'll provide a tour of the Observatory.

Vintage Toys
If vintage toys are your thing, you may want to head over to the Polish Community Center on Washington Avenue Extension in Albany for the vintage toy show. You'll see everything from legos and G.I. Joes to Transformers and XMen. $3, 12 and under are free.
Dealers will be buying and selling.

Phenomenal jazz violinist Regina Carter performs at The Egg on Saturday night at 8.

Ani DiFranco
Caffé Lena presents a solo acoustic evening with Ani DiFranco at Skidmore's Zankel Music Center on Sunday night at 7. Sold out.

Showcase of Homes -week 2
This is the second weekend of three for the Showcase of Homes in Saratoga. Today through Sunday tour some pretty cool new houses. Proceeds go to help Habitat for Humanity and Rebuilding Together. $20

Harvest Festivals
It's that time of year. Everybody's got a harvest festival going on. Here are a few happening this weekend:

Henry Street Harvest Festival - Saratoga
On Sunday Henry Street in Saratoga will be closed between Lake and Caroline Streets for a festival with music, food and kids stuff. 12-4.

Harvest Fest at the Crossings -Colonie
Sunday from noon to 5 at The Crossings. Wagon rides, blacksmithing, clowns, facepainting and lots more family friendly stuff. Free.

Harvest Days at Riverview Orchards
Family events all weekend at Riverview Orchards in Clifton Park followed by Fireworks.

Grafton Lakes Fall Fun Day
Sunday is the Annual Fall Fund day and Barge Chaser Canoe and Kayak Race at Grafton Lakes State Park. Register at 9:30, the race starts at 10:30. Canoe and Kayak Demos.

Garden of Eating Tour
Take a self driven tour through farms of four counties. Design your own tour with help here.

Souvlakifest
Tonight through Saturday is souvlakifest at St. Sophia's Greek Orthodox Church in Albany. The food fest goes from 4-9 tonight and 11-8 tomorrow. You can eat in or take out Chicken or Pork Souvlaki & Gyro,Greek Salad, Spanikopita, spinach pie, Tiropita, cheese pie and Greek pastries.

Tour De Habitat
Race for Habitat for Humanity or cheer cyclists on along the way on Sunday.

Stockade Walkabout
Tour private homes and public buildings that span three centuries of architecture in Schenectady's historic Stockade neighborhood. Also music, carriage rides and food from local vendors. $25, Under 16 $10 Saturday starting at 11.

Celtic Day in the Park
Celtic music, pipers, step dancers, food and craft vendors on Saturday from noon to 7 in Schenectady Central Park. Free.

Farmers' Markets
It won't be long before the farmers markets will be moving indoors. Get some fresh air and wander around the markets in Troy, Schenectady and Saratoga.

Road Trip
Spend 12 hours Ulster County, something or Schoharie. Or truck up to Bennington VT. Or you could do a little fall shopping in Northampton or Woodstock

Garlic road trip
This weekend is the 22nd Hudson Valley Garlic Festival at Cantine Field in Saugerties. Saturday and Sunday from 10 -6. Lots of garlic laden foods, cooking demonstrations, crafts and more. Bring breath mints for the ride home.

Pick a few apples
Where? Here are a few places to start. Don't forget the cider donuts.

Take a walk
The leaves are just starting to turn and the weather should be just right for a nice walk. Before you head out, check out some of our favorite autumn walks.

The Lake George Vintage Race Boat Regatta is this weekend!

"September 2010 will once again mark the coming of the American Power Boat Association’s (APBA) vintage powerboats to scenic Lake George. This year’s APBA Lake George Vintage Race Boat Regatta will kick off with a parade on Friday, September 24th and feature races on Saturday, September 25th. This unusual weekend of racing only comes to the Adirondacks once every other year; so don’t miss this opportunity to witness one of the most unique racing events around."

Ahh, Larkfest. The time of year when suburbanites come to Albany, trash my street with yarf and debris, then complain about how dirty the city is and how they'd never live here.

I'll be going apple picking tomorrow, thanks. Please leave your money with our local businesses. Anyone showing up with a Starbucks latte will, of course, be looked down upon.
