Stuff to do this weekend

I <3 you, you <3 me. Now let's go do something.

Valentine's Day isn't until Monday, but this weekend is a good chance to do something special with your beloved. Currently without a significant other? Great -- revel in the freedom of doing exactly what you want.

Either way, here are a few things to do this weekend.

Roller Derby
The Department of Public Hurts takes on the Capital Legislayers this Saturday night in an Albany All Stars Roller Derby bout. Music by Slick Fitty. $12 at the door, $10 in advance, $4 for kids.

Winter Wine
Proctors is hosting the annual Capital Region Wine Festival. It's a weekend's worth of food and wine tastings and events. Prices vary, but start at around $45. Designated drivers get to enjoy everything but the wine for $25.

Step off!
The annual Black History Month Step Off is at the Palace tonight, "an evening filled with high energy step performances." (Here's a little more about stepping.) $17 adults, $15 kids and students

Music
+ Hank and Cupcakes play Red Square tonight.

+ Locals Super 400 are celebrating their 15th anniversary show Saturday night at The Ale House in Troy.

+ Caleb Lionheart, Dirty Dishes and Grass is Green play Jack's Place at The College of Saint Rose on Saturday night from 7 to 11. $3 with a CSR I.D., $7 without.

+ Jazz singer Jane Monheit is playing The Egg Sunday night. Tickets are $29.50.

Russian movies
The Linda hosts the 3rd annual Russian Film Festival, "showcasing the best of Russian cinema." Screenings start at 4 pm on Saturday. Full festival tickets are $15. Individual screenings are $8.

Rainmaker Reading
Kevin Craig West and Kathleen Carey star in a staged reading of The Rainmaker at Steamer 10, tonight at 8, Saturday at 3 and 8 and Sunday at 3. Earlier on AOA: Kevin Craig West

Weeds and Wildness
Check out the art that is the current exhibit at the Madeville Gallery at the Nott on the Union College campus: Weeds and Wildness, which includes black and white pieces examining natural forms.

Museums
Interesting -- also, inside and warm.

+ This is the last month to check out the Material World exhibit at Mass MoCA (the tissue paper forest looks like something right out of Narnia).

+ The Albany Albany Institute has a new graphic design exhibit.

+ The Clark has an impressive collection and is currently running a European portrait exhibit.

+ And the Tang has a few new exhibits. Also, "The Jewel Thief" closes at the end of this month.

Valentine's Speakeasy Swing Dance
Break out the zoot suits and flapper costumes -- or come as you are. Doc Scanlon's Rhythm Boys headline this speakeasy-themed swing dance at The Arts Center of the Capital Region Saturday night. $15

Also: Danceland's Valentine's ballroom dance is Saturday night at 8 at the Albany Elks Lodge. $12

Go skating with your Valentine

+ Troy is offering $3 admission and free skate rental at the Knickerbacker Ice Arena Saturday from 7-9 pm.

+ Rollarama is having a Valentine's skating party. $10 and $3 skate rental

Valentine's shopping
If you're so inclined, this is the last weekend to shop for Valentine's Day. Here are a few hints.

Play in the snow
Go cross-country skiing or snowshoeing. Or clear off a pond and go skating. It's also a good season for snow angels.

Brunch
Linger over a boozy brunch with friends or start your weekend with a great diner breakfast.

The Vagina Monologues at SUNY Albany this weekend.

Performance information:

Location: Recital Hall, Performing Arts Center (PAC), Uptown Campus, Albany, NY

Friday, February 11 | 7:30pm
Saturday, February 12 | 3:30pm

The cost for the show is $10, and the proceeds from the performances go to Unity House in Troy.

The Hellions of Troy Roller Derby team will be tabling before the performances. Stop over and say hi, then enjoy this amazing show performed by the 2011 Cast of Vagina Warriors!

Other things happening this weekend:

Genericon @ RPI - http://genericon.union.rpi.edu/
-Mostly-anime convention on the RPI campus. Come see all your long held stereotypes about RPI students brought to life!

RPI home games - http://www.rpiathletics.com/index.aspx?path=hockey
-While on the RPI campus for Genericon, come see the #8 RANKED NATIONALLY Engineers take on Colgate (Friday night) and Cornell (Saturday afternoon). I've been going to RPI games for years now, and I can tell you that this is the best team they've had in at least the last 7 years, not just by record but more importantly the talent and ability they show. It's always a good time when Cornell comes to town - if you have never been to an RPI game (or haven't in a while) now is the time.

Monday, if your sweetie is the brainy sort (as, luckily, mine is), you can check out the RPI/Watson presentation as detailed earlier in the week on this blog.

Other Troy things to do include taking in a brew at Brown's or The Ruck (which is potentially, IMO, the best craft beer bar in the Cap Reg.)

It's Condom Week!
Tonight is the UHPP Pub crawl in Hudson and tomorrow is the pub crawl in Troy.

Actually, the Albany All Stars bout isn't until NEXT Saturday - 2/19/11...

Say Something!

We'd really like you to take part in the conversation here at All Over Albany. But we do have a few rules here. Don't worry, they're easy. The first: be kind. The second: treat everyone else with the same respect you'd like to see in return. Cool? Great, post away. Comments are moderated so it might take a little while for your comment to show up. Thanks for being patient.

What's All Over Albany?

All Over Albany is for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. In other words, it's for you. It's kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who can help you find out what's up. Oh, and our friends call us AOA.
