The Egg among jewels
The ESP has a different feel at night.
It's another interesting photo from Flickr user iessi. We like the effect on the lights.
While we're local Flickring, check out this great shot of the moon through one of the sculptures at ESP by el neato and this pic of the sky (and skyline) by J.D. Fielding.

Talking with They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh about The Egg
That's John on the right. Of course, that's also John on the left.
The Egg is "exciting and old," so much so that it prompted They Might Be Giants' John Flansburgh to write a song about it. TMBG is back in town this week to play a couple of shows at the "performance orb." John was nice enough to talk with AOA about one of the stranger venues the band has played -- and let us in on what they were thinking the first time they encountered our giant concrete egg.
TMBG's video about The Egg
As we mentioned last week in our post about the origins of The Egg, the "giant cement performance orb" prompted a song by The Might Be Giants. Here's a fun video (with intro by John Hodgman!) that goes along with that song. It's definitely worth watching. And you never know, there might a little more discussion about all this a little later today.
Cracking open the origins of The Egg
"The Grapefruit" just doesn't have the same ring.
OK, here's the legend.
Governor Nelson Rockefeller is having breakfast with Empire State Plaza architect Wally Harrison. They're discussing the need for a building that would break up the vertical lines of the towers when Rocky looks down at his half grapefruit, tops it with an overturned coffee cup and says, "That... it should look like that."
