A quick recap of the week

week review 2010-02-12

Here are a few highlights from the past week on AOA:

+ Kaitlin shared some local ideas for Valentine's Day gifts.

+ It's been a tough year for local snowmen.

+ Phantogram's debut album, Eyelid Movies, was released in the US.

+ This week's icy, snowy apocalypse was... a dud.

+ Sebastien shared some chilly photos.

+ Greg's "barber poll" tour continued at B'yond Style in Albany.

+ What was up in the Neighborhood this week: Amtrak, parking garages, Siro's, a gallery, snowstorms, Chowderfest, cold weather meals, local taverns, fresh eggs, a new shoe shop, the Troy Photo Center and Vroman's Nose.

+ CJ pointed out a great vintage photo from Saratoga.

+ A few of the items found on Craigslist this week: a woman too pretty to dance with a straight man, enormous safety features, a plan for stopping Five Guys fry waste and a frat paddle.

+ Google wants to hook a community up with extraordinarily fast internet access -- might that community be here?

+ The way we're born now.

+ Sgt Dunbar needs a kickstart for its trip to SXSW.

+ Dawn told us about the Balloon Room.

+ The comment thread for the Spring Awakening tickets was really fun (and a little cringe-inducing -- in a good way). And the Dan Deacon ticket giveaway was geekily nostalgic.

+ And AOA's having a birthday party. You're invited. (We expanded the capacity, but there are only a few spots left!)

If you'd just like the whole week unfiltered, check our listing of the last seven days of AOA.

Thanks to everyone who posted a comment or sent along an idea this week!

In the Times Union yesterday, Fred LeBrun reported on Governor David Paterson's proposed 2010-11 state budget that will close state parks and historic sites, including John Boyd Thacher State Park! It's being decided behind closed doors with no public input. I've started a campaign to fight this closing and will be organizing a protest at the state capital. Please lend your support to the cause!!

Closing the parks doesn't even make fiscal sense. Paying police to patrol the park borders will be more expensive than paying for upkeep of the parks. Also the parks bring in money and are tourist destinations that bring consumers to the area.

Help me fight the park closings!

The Scoop

For a decade All Over Albany was a place for interested and interesting people in New York's Capital Region. It was kind of like having a smart, savvy friend who could help you find out what's up. AOA stopped publishing at the end of 2018.

Albany tightened its rules for shoveling snowy sidewalks last winter -- so how'd that work out?

If winter ever gets its act together and drops more snow on us, there will be sidewalks to shovel. And shortly after that, Albany will... (more)
