A quick recap of the week

week review 2012-09-01

Here are a few highlights from the past holiday week on AOA:

+ The Travers finished in a tie -- here's photographic evidence.

+ Matt Baumgartner revealed the plan for the Miss Albany building.

+ We gave away tickets to the first Bacon Fest NY by asking people to substitute the word "bacon" for a word in something about Capital Region -- the results were pretty funny.

+ There was a big anti-fracking rally in downtown Albany.

+ With the local go-to option for kids shoes closing, Amarit ask about where to buy kid shoes in the Capital Region.

+ Sean Rowe's new album -- The Salesman and the Shark -- was released.

+ The state floated the designs for new historical markers -- people had... suggestions.

+ What was up in the Neighborhood this week: the non-bogged-down summer, the Ice Cream Sandwich Throwdown, exceeded expectations at the fair, Saratoga, UAlbany students, beer with brunch, cardamom gelato, the Brown Derby, a farm stand, Oneonta-style, lobster roll, Etsy, bridges, Marimekko, a giant glob.

+ Doc Brown and his time machine apparently made a stop in Albany.

+ Casey talked with apple farmers about their crop this year -- many of them were really hurt by the odd winter.

+ Here's our listing/map of Capital Region apple picking spots, updated for 2012.

+ A few of the items found on Craigslist this week: an unimpressed lost cat, conversations at the bus stop, the autograph of the Wicked Witch of the East, and a tiny house on wheels.

+ The winners of this year's AOA/Sunmark Startup Grant -- 3 Chicks and a P -- got their giant check. (Really, it was a large cardboard check. They got the prize money via direct deposit.)

+ We gave away 4-packs of tickets to the Saratoga Saratoga Wine & Food and Fall Ferrari Festival grand tasting by asking people: What are you looking forward to doing, eating, experiencing in the Capital Region this fall?

+ The fall slate for the New York State Writers Institute visiting writers series is out. As usual, it's full of interesting events.

+ Greg asked about where to go sailing. (We're still looking for some answers on this one.)

+ Niskayuna took the title for best-tasting drinking water in New York State.

+ And Casey shared some ideas for a day trip to Great Barrington.

If you'd just like the whole week unfiltered, check our listing of the last seven days of AOA.

Thanks to everyone who posted a comment or shared an idea this week!

What a sad case. It's very difficult to find a developer with the resources, vision, and commitment to take on a costly and risky project like St. Joe's. It's a shame that the hidebound conservatism of the neighborhood stymied the first and only realistic, pragmatic, and frankly very cool, project to come along in many years. I hope the church and the neighborhood gets one more shot, although I'm not optimistic.
