Young the Giant at The Palace

the band Young the Giant 2018

The pop rock band Young the Giant is set for a show at The Palace January 30. Tickets go on sale this Friday, October 26 -- they're $24.50 and up.

The band has a new album out this month and the tour that's stopping here is in support of it. Tour/album blurbage:

Describing the overall thesis for Mirror Master, vocalist Sameer Gadhia explains, "Within one single day, we're all so many different people. Especially with the use of social media, we're not just living in the now--we're living on several different timelines simultaneously. A lot of the album came from thinking about how we have all these separations within ourselves that allow us to go about our day. At a time when everyone wants to put each other in a box--culturally, socially, musically--we wanted to show that there are a multitude of reflections inside everything. We don't have to be a certain thing; we can contradict ourselves and show all these different sides of who we are."

This Young the Giant's second stop at the The Palace. They also played a show there in 2017.

The opener for this next show is Sure Sure.

Umphrey's McGee / Experience Hendrix at The Palace

Two shows announced for The Palace today...

Umphrey's McGee
The jam / prog rock band Umphrey's McGee is set to play a show at The Palace February 1. Tickets go on sale this Friday (October 19) -- they're $25 and up.

The band released two albums this year: It's not us and it's you.

They played a show at The Palace last year with saxophonist Joshua Redman.

Experience Hendrix
Also announced for The Palace today: Experience Hendrix April 3. Tickets on sale Friday -- they're $43.75 and up.

Show blurbage: "This latest edition of the much anticipated tour once again emphasizes the influence Hendrix has made on a diverse group of artists. The concerts will bring together artists as disparate as guitar wizard Joe Satriani, blues great Taj Mahal, Ernie Isley and Dweezil Zappa. Megadeth's Dave Mustaine will make his Experience Hendrix Tour debut while mainstays such as Billy Cox, Jonny Lang, and Eric Johnson will also be on board for the expedition."

Greensky Bluegrass at The Palace

the band Greensky Bluegrass 2018

The jamgrass band Greensky Bluegrass is set to play a show at The Palace January 10. Tickets go on sale this Friday, October 12 -- they're $33 ahead / $36 day of.

Greensky Bluegrass played The Egg this past January, and that show sold out well ahead. The Palace has a lot more seats, but if you want your pick it's not a bad idea to get tickets sooner rather than later.

The band has a new album coming out in January.

The opener is Circles Around the Sun.

Get The Led Out
Also announced for The Palace: Get The Led Out February 2. Tickets on sale Friday. They're $33.50 ahead / $35.50 day of.

Jim Gaffigan at The Palace

comedian Jim Gaffigan

Comedian Jim Gaffigan is set for a stand-up show at The Palace March 2. Tickets go on sale this Friday, October 5 -- they're $39.75 and up.

Gaffigan's comedy tends to be observational stuff about everyday things. He's appeared on pretty much every TV talk show, along with almost every other type of show. He's got a role in a dozen different shows or films this year and in the future, according to IMDB. And he released a new comedy special earlier this year.

Back in 2016 he played a show at TU Center, and a few years before that a sold-out show at Proctors. So it would be surprising if tickets for this Palace show sell out or come close.

Bobby Brown + Bell Biv Devoe at The Palace

Bobby Brown Bell Biv Devoe

Bobby Brown and Bell Biv Devoe are co-headlining a show at The Palace November 2. Tickets went on sale today (September 25) -- they're $39.50 and up.

The show will also feature Case and Kid Capri.

Brown and the members of Bell Biv Devoe -- Ricky Bell, Michael Bivins, and Ronnie DeVoe -- were, of course, members of the influential R&B group New Edition back in the day. Brown went on to stardom as a solo artist and Bell Biv Devoe had a bunch of hits, too. They were part of the new jack swing sound.

Old school.

The Disco Biscuits at The Palace

band The Disco Biscuits

The Disco Biscuits are lined up to play shows at The Palace November 23 and 24 (the two days after Thanksgiving). Tickets go on sale this Friday, September 7 -- they're $39.50 ahead / $42.50 day of / $75 for a two-show pass.

Show blurbage:

The Disco Biscuits are an entirely different band today than they were when they first broke out of Philadelphia in the mid-90s. That's not to say that they've abandoned their foundation, switched gears or set sail for distant shores. The Disco Biscuits are still very much the pioneers of "trancefusion," bridging the gap between electronic music and jam bands. They still remain rock pioneers whose soul belongs as much to marathon dance parties as it does to live improvisational journeys. They still employ emerging technologies to help them create music that is 100 percent human although, perhaps, not entirely of this earth.

Of course, for many years Mariaville in Schenectady County was the site of the Biscuits-backed Camp Bisco music festival. The last one was 2014 -- there had been complaints from neighbors and officials expressed concerns about safety. In 2015 the county denied a permit necessary for the festival. It's since moved on to a site in Pennsylvania.

Jewel
Also announced Tuesday for The Palace: Jewel will be there December 14. It's her Handmade Holiday Tour, "performing Holiday classics, Holiday originals and classic Jewel songs alongside Special Guests and family members Atz, Atz Lee and Nikos Kilcher (Alaska: The Last Frontier)." Tickets go on sale Friday -- they're $39.50 and up.

That documentary about the heyday of the Albany Patroons premieres at The Palace this month

That documentary about the old Albany Patroons and the Continental Basketball Association -- now titled The Minor League Mecca -- is set to premiere at The Palace September 22. And it's free to attend.

The Albany-based Upside Collective agency produced the doc, which follows rise and fall of the team's heyday in 1980s Albany. Blurbage:

As the leading franchise in the Continental Basketball Association from 1982 to 1992, the Albany Patroons left an indelible mark on the city of Albany, the CBA and the NBA. From elite coaches like Phil Jackson, Bill Mussleman and George Karl to standout players like Michael Ray Richardson, Mario Ellie, Tony Campbell, Sidney Lowe, Rick Carlisle and Scott Brooks, the Patroons' legacy continues to shape the world of professional basketball. We are working to bring you the untold story of the Patroons' quick rise, championship success and ultimate downfall. Beyond the franchise's ups and downs, the stories of the individuals involved, from fans, to executives to coaches and players are implausible, hilarious and inspiring.

A lot of coaches and players who'd go on to have big NBA careers came through Albany as part of the Patroons. And it looks like the filmmakers were able to talk with with a bunch of them, including Phil Jackson, George Karl, Rick Carlisle, and Mario Elie.

The link at the top to the doc's website includes a handful of clips.

The screening on September 22 also has a VIP reception that "will allow fans to mingle and share memories with former Patroon notables while enjoying hors d'oeuvres and an open bar." It's a benefit for Capital District YMCA. Tickets for that are $125 and available online.

Amy Schumer at The Palace

comedian Amy Schumer 2018

Amy Schumer will be at The Palace November 8 for a stand-up show. Tickets go on sale this Monday, August 27 -- they're $32.

The Palace stop is part of a fall tour that, according to the press materials, will include all new material.

Of course, Schumer made a pop-up appearance at MopCo in Schenectady earlier this summer where she worked some material. Maybe some of that will end up in the new tour.

Schumer has sold out shows here before, so if you'd like to go to this show and have your pick of seats, getting tickets sooner rather than later isn't a bad idea.

4192 - An Evening with Pete Rose Live! at The Palace

Pete Rose credit John VanderHaagen CC

Photo: Flickr user John VanderHaagen (CC BY 2.0). His Flickr stream includes a handful of old snapshots of the Big Red Machine.

Further evidence we are living in the weird timeline...

A show called 4192 - An Evening with Pete Rose Live! will be at The Palace September 14. Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 8 -- they're $25 and up.

And, yep, that's Pete Rose as in the (in)famous baseball not-Hall of Famer. Blurbage:

Pete will share stories of his past in baseball in this Broadway style theatrical event that captures the golden years of America's pastime. Storytelling, enhanced with visuals, will make the audience laugh as well as be inspired by "Charlie Hustle." Pete Rose is an American icon and, in this show, he tells it all as he takes you inside the game of baseball as no other person can.
Using hi-tech multimedia that creates a game day atmosphere, the stage will be transformed into a field of memories and the audience will be transported to the golden era of baseball, complete with all the trappings of a World Series game including the first pitch, Star-Spangled Banner and of course, introductions.

We can only hope the production will capture the charm of the astroturfed concrete spaceship that was Riverfront Stadium. And maybe it'll feel like you're right there as bets are being placed on games. (But never against the Reds, right.)

Also: Is it possible to get Peter G. Rose involved in this show somehow? We'd kind of like to see them discuss Dutch cookery.

(He's a Cincinnati icon and should be in the Hall of Fame.)

Darci Lynne
The Palace also announced Monday that teen ventriloquist Darci Lynne -- from America's Got Talent -- will be there November 3. Tickets go on sale this Friday, June 8 -- they're $29.75.

Because... it's the weird timeline.

Ja Rule + Ashanti + Lloyd at The Palace

ashanti ja rule lloyd

Together again: Ja Rule and Ashanti are set to play a show at The Palace June 22. Ticket are on sale now -- they're $38 and up.

Of course, the rapper and R&B singer collaborated on some big hits back in the day. And they've apparently been friends ever since (in that People article she even sticks up for him on the Fyre Festival). And more recently they teamed up a track on the Hamilton mixtape.

The bill for the Palace also features the R&B singer Lloyd, who returned in 2016 after a hiatus and even made an appearance on Atlanta.

Ja Rule and Ashanti have both made appearances locally in recent months, but we're guessing this show will be popular. So if you want tickets, sooner rather later isn't a bad idea.

Modest Mouse at The Palace

the band Modest Mouse 2018

While we're on the subject, the members of Modest Mouse have apparently been inhabited by aliens. So, that's something.

The rock band Modest Mouse is set to play a show at The Palace October 14. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 18 -- they're $49.50.

Back in 2014, Modest Mouse sold out two shows at Ommegang pretty much instantly. We're guessing this one fills up, too. So, you know what to do.

By the way: The band has released just two albums since 2004's Good News for People Who Love Bad News.

School House Rock Live! at The Palace

A touring production of School House Rock Live! will be at The Palace this Sunday, April 29. Tickets are $20 for adults / free for kids 12 and under.

The show is a stage production of the great old Saturday morning cartoon shorts. Show blurbage:

Schoolhouse Rock Live! follows Tom, a nerve-wracked school teacher who is nervous about his first day of teaching. He tries to relax by watching TV, when various characters representing facets of his personality emerge from the set and show him how to win his students over with imagination and music, through such songs as "Just a Bill," "Lolly, Lolly, Lolly" and "Conjunction Junction."

As it happens, the the writer of those catchy educational songs -- Bob Dorough -- died this week at age 94.

The Palace show starts at 2 pm Sunday.

David Byrne at The Palace

musician David Byrne

The David Byrne is set to play at show at The Palace September 9. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 16 -- they're $49.50 and up.

Tour blurbage:

A twelve-piece band will join Byrne as he performs songs from his recently released solo album, American Utopia, classics from his solo career and favorites from his days with Talking Heads. ...
Byrne called the tour "the most ambitious show I've done since the shows that were filmed for Stop Making Sense." This marks Byrne's first extensive outing since his 2013 shows with St. Vincent and also his first solo tour since 2009.

The opener for the show at Palace is Tune-Yards.

David Blaine at The Palace

magician David Blaine

Magician David Blaine to lined up for a show at The Palace June 26. Tickets go on sale this Friday, March 2 -- they're $49 and up.

There are also various pre-sales this week for the Palace show if you're so inclined.

Lindsey Stirling at The Palace

Lindsey Stirling 2017

Violinist/dancer/composer Lindsey Stirling is returning to The Palace November 8. Tickets go on sale this Friday, November 8 -- they're $34.50 and up.

Stirling is a star from the Land of Youtube. The Palace date appears to be the first stop on her "Warmer in the Winter Christmas Tour." So holiday music is probably a good bet.

She last made a stop here in the summer of 2016 at The Palace.

GRiZ -- Grant Kwiecinski -- also happens to be gay, which he wrote about for HuffPost earlier this year, including the stress he faced as teen, worried that he wouldn't fit in. The bottom line in the piece: "Never ever give up on yourself. It might not be cool to love Britney Spears, study AP physics or play saxophone but, it's totally cool to be gay."

I'll be stopping in cities the band and I didn't get to visit the first time around.

Bastille at The Palace

the band Bastille 2017

The pop band Bastille is set to play a show at The Palace September 12. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 19 -- they're $29.50 and up.

The opener for the show is Frenship.

Bastille played a show at Upstate Concert Hall in 2014 and it sold out (quickly, if we remember correctly). So if you'd like to catch the Palace show, getting tickets sooner rather than later is probably a good idea.

The band has been touring in support of a new album, which has an immigrant theme. (The members of the band all are all immigrants or first-generation Americans.) From a Rolling Stone interview this past August with frontman Sameer Gadhia about the album:

I see us as a personally political band. Sometimes you get passed a torch. We have strong beliefs, and now more so than ever, we're talking about human rights. Our main thing is about equality. It's a humanitarian issue; it's not a political issue. So we're comfortable going forward on this path; we have the platform and an open line of dialogue with our fans, some of whom are completely unaware of the racial struggles in America, or the racial struggles that we deal with on a personal level. I think that's a very powerful, important thing. The thing about music is that it really can bring people together, and that's what we hope we can do.

The opener for the show at The Palace is Lewis Del Mar.

R. Kelly at the Palace

musician R Kelly

The Palace announced today that R. Kelly is set play a show there September 29. Tickets go on sale this Friday, September 2 -- they're $68 and up.

Kelly is, of course, one of the most successful R&B artists of all time. He's sold more than 40 million albums, won multiple Grammys, and worked with a bunch of different artists.

He's also become a very controversial figure, with a string of allegations that he had sexual relationships with underage women going back to the 1990s -- Kelly was acquitted of the charges that were filed against him -- and there was the whole issue of his marriage to Aaliyah. He has become a prominent example of the question of whether art can be separated from its artist.

Twiddle at The Palace for New Year's Eve

twiddle the band

The Palace announced this week that Twiddle will be playing a New Year's Eve show there this year. Tickets go on sale this Friday (September 2) -- they're $39 ahead / $44 day of.

The New Year's Eve date at the Palace has been occupied by moe. in recent years. So the venue has decided to keep it jammy.

By the way: There's a pre-sale via the band's website starting this Wednesday.

Elvis Costello at The Palace

elvis costello

The Elvis Costello is set to play a show at The Palace October 26. Tickets go on sale this Friday (August 19) -- they're $49.50 and up.

Costello will be playing with his band, The Imposters.

He was in the area back in 2013 for a solo show at the Troy Music Hall. That show sold out. And even though the Palace is significantly bigger than the Troy Music Hall, it's probably not a bad idea to get tickets sooner rather than later if you'd like to go.

The Palace is planning a major expansion

Palace expansion rendering 2016-July from northeast cropped

The Palace Theatre has announced plans for a major expansion that would both significantly add to the venue's capabilities and change the block on which it sits in downtown Albany.

Press release blurbage for the expansion, which is projected to cost $65 million:

The project, which will build out the Palace Theatre's current footprint along North Pearl Street, will consist of multiple elements, including the addition of a new 600-seat theatre, community and educational space, and a video post-production center. Renovations will also occur within the main theatre to expand and enhance the current stage, as well as the lobby, box office and backstage areas.

That the Palace had some sort of expansion in mind isn't too surprising after word got out earlier this year that it had acquired a string of properties north of the theater on Pearl Street. But the scale of the proposed expansion is remarkable.

Here are a few more details, large-format renderings, and few other things.

Comedians/actors Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are set for a show at The Palace August 25. Tickets go on sale this Friday, May 6 -- they're $39.50 and up.

The comedy show for the married couple is titled "Summer of 69: No Apostrophe." Blurbage:

With this show, Nick Offerman and Megan Mullally are yanking the britches right off of their marriage, exposing the salacious details of their fiery union for all the world to enjoy, featuring songs, funny talking, heavy ribaldry, light petting and an astonishing final act of completion.

Mullally, of course, has appeared in a bunch of TV shows and movies, including Will and Grace. Offerman is most famous for playing Ron Swanson on Parks and Recreation, on which Mullally also appeared on his character's ex-wife.

Lindsey Stirling at The Palace

lindsey stirling 2016

Violinist/dancer/composer Lindsey Stirling is set to play a show at The Palace July 25. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Saturday, April 23 -- they're $29.50.

There are some people who just seem to be "from the internet." Stirling is one of those people. Blurbage:

Lindsey Stirling is one of the biggest artist development breakthrough stories in recent years. A classically trained violinist from Gilbert, Ariz., Lindsey has entered a futurist world of electronic big beats and animation, leaping through the music industry with over 7.8 million YouTube subscribers, over 1 billion views on her YouTube channel, Billboard chart-topping hits and sold out tours worldwide. She's created a new music world where the romance of Celtic folk music and modern classical meet the infectious energy of dance and electronica. On stage, Stirling moves with the grace of a ballerina but works the crowd into a frenzy, "dropping the beat" like a rave fairy.

Further evidence: She's racked up more than 27 million views on Youtube for a video in which she plays a medley of music from The Legend of Zelda while dancing through a forest dressed as Link.

Chris Cornell at The Palace

chris cornell 2016

Rocker Chris Cornell is set to play a show at The Palace July 1. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, March 11 -- they're $39.50 and up.

As you know, Cornell was the frontman for Soundgarden, and later for Audioslave. 90s music sounded like it did in part because of him. (Fun fact about how old you are: Superunknown was released this week 22 years ago.) He'll be touring in a support of a solo album he released last fall.

Back in 2011 Cornell played an acoustic show at The Egg and it sold out. The Palace is a much bigger venue, but it still might be a get-tickets-sooner-rather-than-later sort of affair if you're interested in going.

Bill Maher at the Palace

bill maher

Comedian/TV host Bill Maher is set to play a stand-up show at The Palace November 6. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, February 26 -- they're $39.50 and up.

As you know, Maher is famous for his comedy and commentary on politics, religion, and current events. His show on HBO -- Real Time with Bill Maher -- has run for more than a decade.

Maher was last at The Palace in 2013.

Random media history bit: The Daily Show was created by Comedy Central in the 1990s to replace Politically Incorrect, which Maher had taken from the channel over to ABC.

Speaking of comedy at the Palace...
+ Jerry Seinfeld is there March 3
+ And Lewis Black will be there April 15

Jerry Seinfeld at The Palace

jerry seinfeld standup

Jerry Seinfeld is set to return to The Palace for a stand-up show March 3. Tickets go on sale Friday, November 20 to the general public -- they're $48 and up.

Seinfeld has made a recent habit of playing the Palace in October every two years (he was last here in October 2013). So, a March visit? What's the deal with that?

Lewis Black returning to the Palace

Lewis Black angry promo photo

Comedian Lewis Black is scheduled for a return to the Palace April 15. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday (November 6) -- they're $29.50 and up.

As you know, Black is famous for his many appearances on The Daily Show. This stand-tour is called "The Emperor's New Clothes: The Naked Truth" and is being promoted as "all new." (Spoilers: He's probably angry about a few things.)

Black has performed in Albany a bunch of times, mostly recently in October of 2014.

Palace Movie Series 2015-2016

ghostbusters still

The season opens with Ghostbusters on October 12.

The schedule for the new season of The Palace's movie series is out. It includes 18 dates, with films that range from classics (Rear Window) to holiday favorites (A Christmas Story) to popular recent releases (The Minions).

Here's the schedule...

(there's more)

Dave Chappelle at The Palace

Dave Chappelle 2015

Comedian Dave Chappelle is set to play The Palace October 4. Tickets go on sale Monday (August 17) -- they're $58 (four-ticket limit).

Chappelle was riding a big wave of popularity back in the mid-2000s thanks in part to his Chappelle's Show on Comedy Central. And then, after two seasons, he famously quit, citing the effect the show was having on his life. (He moved his family to a small rural town outside of Dayton, Ohio.) The last few years he's been slowly making a comeback doing stand-up shows.

The Palace is big, but we're guessing this has a good chance of selling out. So, if you'd like to go, getting tickets sooner rather later is a good idea.

Brandi Carlile at The Palace

Brandi Carlile

Alt-country singer/songwriter Brandi Carlile is set to play The Palace May 23. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 27 -- they're $29.50 and up.

Carlile will be touring in support of a new album coming out next month. Over at NPR, Ann Powers described the songs on the album: "Some of them rattle the floorboards; others are quieter, offering beautiful harmonies or rich storytelling. But no matter what they sound like, the songs on this release feel like rock and roll."

Daniel Tosh at The Palace x2

comedian daniel tosh

Comedian Daniel Tosh is set for a stand-up show at The Palace June 17. Ticket went on sale today (Friday, February 20) -- they're $49.50 and up.

Apparently the tickets have sold well. The Palace announced Friday that it's added a second Tosh show on June 17. So the first show is at 7 pm, and the second show is at 9:30 pm.

Tosh is most famous for his Comedy Central show, Tosh.0, which is largely focused on internet videos (and making fun of them). It's been Comedy's Central most-watched show.

Cosby
The Palace also announced Friday that it's Bill Cosby stand-up show scheduled for April 24 has been postponed indefinitely (a date in Rochester that week was also canceled). That's not surprising -- Cosby shows around the country been canceled in recent months as the accusations of sexual assault against the comedian have accumulated.

Sufjan Stevens at The Palace

sufjan stevens 2015

The Sufjan Stevens is set to play a show at The Palace April 15. Tickets go on sale this Friday, January 30 -- they're $30 and up. (There's also a pre-sale.)

Stevens will be touring to promote a new album, Carrie & Lowell. (Not to be confused with Carey Lowell.) Tour blurbage:

Thematically the 11 songs address life and death, love and loss, and the artist's struggle to make sense of the beauty and ugliness of love. The album is named for Stevens' mother and stepfather and is a return to Stevens' folk roots.
A singer-songwriter currently living in Brooklyn, NY, Stevens' preoccupation with epic concepts has motivated two state records (Michigan & Illinois), a collection of sacred and biblical songs (Seven Swans), an electronic album for the animals of the Chinese zodiac (Enjoy Your Rabbit), two Christmas box sets (Songs for Christmas, vol. 1-5 and Silver & Gold, vol. 6-10), and a BAM-commissioned programmatic tone poem for the Brooklyn-Queens Expressway (The BQE). In 2010 Stevens released an expansive EP (All Delighted People) and the full length The Age of Adz, a collection of songs partly inspired by the outsider artist Royal Robertson.

Weird Al at The Palace

weird al mandatory tour 2015 poster clip

In retrospect it should have been obvious that totalitarian dictatorship was the inevitable endgame of the Weird Al situation.

The "Weird Al" Yankovic is set to play a show at The Palace July 11. Tickets go on sale to the general public January 30 -- they're $29.50 and up.

Tour blurbage:

Weird Al released his 14th studio album Mandatory Fun on July 15th. The album features parodies of some of the biggest hits of the past year, including Pharrell Williams' "Happy" ("Tacky"), Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines" ("Word Crimes"), Lorde's "Royals" ("Foil"), Iggy Azalea's "Fancy" ("Handy") and Imagine Dragons' "Radioactive" ("Inactive"). The album also features several inspired originals and pastiches ("Lame Claim to Fame," "Sports Song," "My Own Eyes," "Mission Statement," "First World Problems" and "Jackson Park Express") along with Al's latest accordion-fueled medley, "NOW That's What I Call Polka!"

Weird Al was last in town in 2011 for a show at The Palace. The according uprising has been waiting for this moment ever since.

The Price is Right Live! returning to The Palace

price is right live publicity photo

do do de dooo

The Price is Right Live -- a traveling version of The Price is Right -- will be back at The Palace April 10. Tickets go on sale this Saturday (November 22) -- they're $32.75 and up.

The show was at the Palace back in 2013 and was so popular that a second date was added. So if you're interested in going, getting tickets sooner rather than later might not be a bad idea.

Show blurbage:

The Price Is Right Live! is the hit interactive stage show that gives contestants pulled right from the audience the chance to "Come On Down" to win appliances, vacations and even new cars by playing classic games from television's longest running and most popular game show. From Plinko to Cliffhangers to the Big Wheel, and even the fabulous Showcase, all the favorite games are played just like the TV show.

From what we can gather the live version doesn't work exactly like the TV version -- more audience members are involved in various ways, and the prizes are smaller.

The last time the show was here pre-registration was required to be a potential contestant. It looks like that's changed -- and contestants are now picked from a pool of people who register on site just ahead of the show. You don't have to be a ticket holder to put your name in to be a contestant, according to the show FAQ.

Gabriel Iglesias, Brian Regan at The Palace

gabriel iglesias brian regan

Gabriel Iglesias (left) and Brian Regan

Two recently announced shows:

Gabriel Iglesias
Comedian Gabriel Iglesias is set to play a stand-up show at The Palace December 5. Tickets go on sale the general public this Friday (October 10) -- they're $33 and up.

The self-described "fluffy" comedian has been on Comedy Central a bunch (that's him on the right). And earlier this year he released a stand-up film, The Fluffy Movie. He was last in town at The Palace in 2012, and in 2011 played two shows in one night at The Egg.

Brian Regan
Comedian Brian Regan is set for a stand-up show at The Palace on May 5, 2015. (That's like... next year.) Tickets went on sale this past Friday (October 3) -- they're $35.75 and up.

Regan's been around for a long time, with numerous tours and TV appearances. He recently popped up on Jerry Seinfeld's Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee.

Palace Premier Movie Series 2014-2015

The Goonies Chunk

You'll neither have to plead nor do the truffle shuffle -- the schedule is below.

The schedule for the new season of The Palace's Premier Movie Series is out. It includes 18 dates, with films that range from classic classics (The Wizard of Oz) to holiday classics (It's a Wonderful Life) to cult classics (The Big Lebowski) to 80s classics (The Goonies) to modern could-be-classics (Frozen).

Tickets are $5 , but The Palace is also offering a season pass -- $45 for all 18 dates (half price). They're on sale now.

Nas: Time is Illmatic at The Palace

NAS press photo

Hip hop titan Nas is set to be at The Palace October 3 for a concert and screening of the new documentary Nas:Time is Illmatic. Tickets go on sale this Friday (August 15) -- they're $40 and up.

The show at the Palace will be a screening of the doc followed by Nas performing the album Illmatic live from the start to finish.

It's been 20 years since the album's release. The doc looks at Nas' childhood and early career and the recording of Illmatic. Here's a Variety review following its release at the Tribeca Film Fest earlier this year.

John Oliver at The Palace

comedian john oliver

Comedian John Oliver is set for a standup show at The Palace December 13. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday (August 15) -- they're $39.75.

Oliver is famous for his many years on The Daily Show, of course. But he recently left the show for his own show on HBO: Last Week Tonight. And it's already included some great segments -- you can watch many of them on YouTube.

He was last in town for a show at The Egg in January of 2013.

Ray LaMontagne at The Palace

ray lamontagne

Singer/songwriter Ray LaMontagne is set to play at show at The Palace November 9. Tickets go on sale August 15 -- they're $35 and up.

It's been a decade since the release of "Trouble," the song that was played seemingly everywhere and made LaMontagne popular. He has a new album out this year that was produced by Dan Auerbach from The Black Keys.

LaMontagne also apparently has a reputation for being "enigmatic", in part because he lives in "a farmhouse in the remote hills of Western Massachusetts." Ashland, apparently. (How he ever manages to return to civilization after roaming the far reaches of... MASSACHUSETTS!... is obviously some sort of miracle.)

The opener for the show at the Palace is the duo The Belle Brigade.

America's Test Kitchen Live at The Palace

christopher kimball america's test kitchen

Christopher Kimball

The Palace announced today that America's Test Kitchen Live -- a stage show from the popular PBS TV cooking show -- will be at the theater April 13 at 3 pm. Tickets go on sale to the general public Friday (February 28) -- they're $35 and up.

America's Test Kitchen is produced by the same people behind Cooks Illustrated, the popular magazine devoted to careful testing of recipes, cooking techniques, and kitchen gadgets. Event blurbage:

As host of America's Test Kitchen for the past 14 seasons, as well as editor of the popular Cooks Illustrated magazine, Christopher Kimball will share his strong and entertaining opinions on culinary trends and cooking equipment. He'll take questions from the audience as well as test their knowledge of unusual ingredients in an interactive segment during the live show. America's Test Kitchen Live with Christopher Kimball will deliver a fun and informative evening for fans and foodies around the country.
Dan Souza is a senior editor of Cook's Illustrated and an on-screen test cook for America's Test Kitchen. In addition to his work on Cook's Illustrated, Dan has contributed content to a dozen America's Test Kitchen cookbooks, most recently executing and editing the test kitchen experiments for The Science of Good Cooking (October 2012). Dan cut his culinary teeth as an apprentice in Hungary before graduating first in his class from the Culinary Institute of America (CIA). After cooking in restaurants in New York City and Boston, however, he found his true calling: applying good science to create great recipes for the home cook.

(This NYT Mag article from a few years back is an interesting look at Kimball and the Cooks Illustrated empire. )

The Palace event also has a VIP ticket that includes a book and meet-and-greet with Chris Kimball's bowtie. It's $85.

Steve Martin (and his banjo) at The Palace

steve martin playing banjo

Mr. Martin, along with Edie Brickell and the Steep Canyon Rangers.

The Palace announced today that Steve Martin will be at the theater June 20 for "an evening of music and comedy" with the Steep Canyon Rangers and Edie Brickell. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday (February 21) -- they're $39.50.

Martin is pretty much your typical actor/comedian/author/banjo playing renaissance man. He and Edie Brickell recently won a Grammy for best American roots song (and were nominated for best Americana album). There's a clip of Martin and the gang post jump.

From the Palace event blurbage: "The concert will showcase new material performed by Martin and Brickell, including selections from their album 'Love Has Come for You' along with the unique hybrid of bluegrass and comedy that Martin and The Steep Canyon Rangers have been delighting audiences with at their sold-out, critically acclaimed shows."

Martin was last at the Palace in 2011, but that was "A Conversation with Steve Martin" as opposed to "An Evening of Music and Comedy with Steve Martin and Other People."

By the way: The Palace's new digital projector will be up and running for a slate of movies March 1. [Biz Review]

Diana Ross at The Palace

diana ross 2010

Yet another concert announcement: Diana Ross is set to play The Palace June 24. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday (February 14) -- the price range is $45-$175. (The upper end is for the "Gold Circle," which we can only guess is actually made of gold.)

Ross is, of course, one of the most famous and popular singers of American pop music ever, and an influence on a huge range of artists. It sounds like the Palace show will be her singing the hits -- of which there were many, both with The Supremes and solo.

Family Feud Live at The Palace

family feud liveCheesy but possibly fun: A live, audience participation version of The Family Feud is coming to the Palace May 2. Tickets went on sale today (February 7) -- they're $27.50 and up.

From what we can gather, the stage show more or less works like the TV show except that the "families" are people drawn at random from the crowd. The show cycles through the game twice. In between there's other audience participation stuff and prizes.

The random "family" thing is a bit weird -- it seems like it'd be more fun to have people team up on their own, but maybe that doesn't work in practice.

At any rate, the Palace show is on a Friday at 8 pm, so you won't have to be staying home sick from school to watch it.

By the way: There was a live version of the Price is Right that stopped at the Palace twice last year, and was apparently quite popular. So maybe this will be, too.

Amy Schumer at the Palace

comedian Amy Schumer 2013

Update: The show has been rescheduled for October 25 "due to television commitments."
____
Comedian Amy Schumer will be at The Palace for a standup show March 13. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday, December 6 -- they're $37.50 and $45.

Here's how Schumer described her standup act to the St. Louis Post Dispatch last year:

[P]eople always say I look sweet but say some cutting stuff with a smile. I am sweet, but it's an adult show. ... I don't like the observational stuff. I like tackling the stuff nobody else talks about, like the darkest, most serious thing about yourself. I talk about life and sex and personal stories and stuff everybody can relate to, and some can't.

In addition to her standup, Schumer also has a show on Comedy Central, Inside Amy Schumer, which is set to return for a second season next spring with a bunch of notable guest stars (including Paul Giamatti, Parker Posey, Questlove, and Mike Birbiglia). And Judd Apatow is directing a movie that she wrote and will star in.

Schumer played The Egg this past spring and the show sold out. The Palace has a lot more seats, but even so, if you'd like to go, it's probably better to get tickets sooner rather than later.

Bonus bit: Amy Schumer is related to Chuck Schumer -- they're second cousins.

Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight at the Palace

The Palace announced today that Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight -- the HBO film that shot in Albany and Schenectady last year -- will be screened at the theater December 4. The film premiered on the cable channel back in October.

Muhammad Ali's Greatest Fight is based on the Howard Bingham book of the same title -- it's about Ali's refusal to fight in the Vietnam War, and specifically, the Supreme Court's handling of the case. In fact, Ali apparently only appears in the film via archival footage. Most of the action seems to center on the justices and their clerks.

The movie was directed by Stephen Frears, and stars Christopher Plummer, Danny Glover, Frank Langella (they play justices), and Benjamin Walker (a clerk). It got "generally favorable" reviews.

The Palace screening is at 7 pm on December 4. Tickets are free -- they're available at the Palace box office on first come, first serve basis.

Jerry Seinfeld back at the Palace

jerry seinfeld standup

Jerry Seinfeld is set to perform a stand-up show at the Palace October 4. Tickets are $48 and up -- they go on sale August 9.

Seinfeld was last in town in October 2011 for a show at the Palace. And his previous visit to that was in October 2009. Obvious conclusion: Jerry Seinfeld loves Albany in October. (What is the deal with Albany in October...)

In addition to sleeping on what is surely an enormous bed of money from his sitcom, Seinfeld lately has been doing a fun online video series: Comedians in Cars Getting Coffee. The one with Alec Baldwin is a good place to start.

Trailer Park Boys at the Palace

trailer park boys christmas 2013

Merry Christmas, eh.

The Trailer Park Boys are scheduled to bring a new live show to the Palace December 12. Tickets are $35 and up -- they go on sale this Friday, June 28. (There's also a pre-sale.)

The Trailer Park Boys are a Canadian mockumentary group that's created a TV series and movies around characters who live in a trailer park in Nova Scotia. From the blurbage for this live tour:

When Bubbles tries to spread the true meaning of Christmas to the world, his good-hearted plans are botched by Julian wanting to cash in on the Festive season and Ricky's relentless pursuit to meet the real Santa. And if that wasn't enough, all three of them have to deal with the very intoxicated Jim Lahey and his cheeseburger-eating sidekick, Randy.

The group played a show at The Egg last year -- and it sold out. So if you're interested in going to see them at the Palace, you might want to think about getting tickets sooner rather than later.

Bill Maher at the Palace

Comedian Bill Maher is schedule for a stand up show at Palace November 10. Tickets go on sale this Friday (April 12) -- they start at $39.50.

The Price is Right Live at the Palace

price is right live publicity photo

And they bring the wheel. Of course.

The Price is Right Live -- a traveling version of The Price is Right -- is coming to the Palace May 31. Tickets are $32.75 -- they go on sale March 29.

While we have seen The Price is Right many times (though probably not in at least a decade), we weren't familiar with this traveling version. Blurbage:

The Price Is Right Live! is the hit interactive stage show that gives contestants pulled right from the audience the chance to "Come On Down" to win appliances, vacations and even new cars by playing classic games from television's longest running and most popular game show. From Plinko to Cliffhangers to the Big Wheel, and even the fabulous Showcase, all the favorite games are played just like the TV show.

Apparently the show has been produced at a series of places around the country: Las Vegas, Foxwoods, Atlantic City, Branson. From what we can gather the live version doesn't work exactly like the TV version -- more audience members are involved in various ways, and the prizes are smaller. (Here's the Yelp profile for the Las Vegas show.)

To be a potential contestant you have to register ahead of time -- but you don't have to buy a ticket (you'll need a ticket to watch the show in the theater).

Really, the best part about this show may be that you don't have to stay home sick from school to watch it.

Aziz Ansari at the Palace

aziz ansari

Comedian Aziz Ansari will be at the Palace May 14 for a standup show. Tickets are $27 and $32 -- they're on sale now.

Of course, Ansari stars on Parks and Recreation. But he's appeared in a bunch of other shows and movies, as well comedy specials. And during the last year, he's gone the Louis CK route and posted one of his standup specials for a $5 download.

Here's a recent Ansari interview The AV Club. And here's a gif of him making Michelle Dockery laugh.

Kevin James at the Palace; and the parade of comedians

Kevin James tour publicity photoComedian Kevin James will be at the Palace June 2 for a stand up show. Tickets are $28 and up -- they go on sale this Friday (March 1).

James is, of course, the guy from the King of Queens sitcom. And now he's the guy from Movie That Will Get Bad Reviews But Still Make a Surprisingly Large Amount of Money.

Comedy, comedy, comedy
By the way: Albany apparently has become a popular stop on the comedy circuit. Among the comics making a stop here over the next few months: Mike Epps, Lewis Black, Demetri Martin, Ron White, Amy Schumer, Stephen Lynch, and Tracy Morgan. Not to mention a handful who've already made a stop in recent months: Kevin Hart, Marc Maron, Jeff Dunham, and Lisa Lampanelli. (And we're sure there are others.)

The last time the show was in town, it sold out. So if you'd like to go, getting tickets sooner rather than later is probably a good idea.

From the blurbage for RAIN:

RAIN performs the full range of The Beatles' discography live onstage, including the most complex and challenging songs that The Beatles themselves recorded in the studio but never performed for an audience. Together longer than The Beatles, RAIN has mastered every song, gesture and nuance of the legendary foursome, delivering a totally live, note-for-note performance that's as infectious as it is transporting.

The Tedeschi Trucks Band is only about two years old. But the band's husband-and-wife leaders -- Derek Trucks and Susan Tedeschi -- were successful with their own, separate bands before forming the group. Its debut album won the 2012 Grammy for Best Blues Album.

Speaking of the blues... Two other nominees for that blues Grammy also have shows coming up here this fall: The Warren Haynes Band at The Egg on October 13, Keb' Mo' at The Egg on October 20.

Palace classic movies series 2012-2013

palace theater exterior 2012 sunny

The Palace has released the slate for the next season of its classic movie series. It includes 15 films and starts later this month. The screenings are Monday nights (with a few exceptions).

Tickets are $5, but The Palace is also offering a season pass -- $37.50 for all 15 films (half price). They go on sale starting this Friday.

The schedule is after the jump.

Fiona Apple at the Palace

fiona apple looking to side

The Palace has posted that Fiona Apple will be playing a show there October 19. Tickets go on sale to the general public this Friday (July 13). They start at $34.50.

Apple released her first album in seven years in June: The Idler Wheel Is Wiser Than the Driver of the Screw and Whipping Cords Will Serve You More Than Ropes Will Ever Do. (Hey, that's relatively short compared to When the Pawn...) It's gotten good reviews.

Why so long between albums? As she told NPR recently: "The only reason that it takes me seven years to do stuff is because I just don't really have a plan."

By the way: Morrissey is scheduled to play a show at the Palace the day before Apple. If you see the building weeping quietly in a corner that weekend, you'll have to understand. It will have been a very emotional 24 hours.

Morrissey at The Palace

morrissey with catThe Palace announced today that Morrissey is set to play there October 18. Tickets go on sale this Friday -- they start at $29.50.

The stop is party of a US tour for Morrissey on which he's expected to play old hits and new stuff. He said recently he plans to retire in the next few years -- (updated) or he doesn't.

Morrissey was, of course, the singer for the Smiths before a solo career. They've been a huge influence in indie music. (It makes us laugh -- a bit ruefully -- that there are probably people who think "How Soon Is Now" is just the theme song for Charmed.)

Bill Cosby at The Palace

bill cosbyBill Cosby will be at The Palace November 10. Tickets go on sale this Friday (June 8) -- they start at $48.

The show is being touted as "an evening with the comedic legend," so we're guessing Cosby will be doing stand up. He's 74 years old now. But a review of stand up show from a year and a half a go reported that "he can still bring it." Maybe it's all the pudding pops and sweaters. [AP/The Hollywood Reporter]

Darrell Hammond at the Palace

darrell hammondComedian Darrell Hammond will be at the Palace April 27 for "an evening of comedy" (we're assuming that means he'll be doing standup). Tickets go on sale this Friday (February 17). They start at $29.50.

As you well know, Hammond was on Saturday Night Live forever. His impression of Bill Clinton is better than Bill Clinton's Bill Clinton. Hammond left the show in 2011. He's been promoting a memoir about his career, as well as his abusive childhood, mental illness, and drug problems.

Also coming to the Palace: One Night of Queen, a Queen tribute show, on April 1.

Company of Thieves can't stay away

company of thieves lettersApparently powerless to resist the draw of the Capital Region, Company of Thieves is scheduled to play a show at Jillian's February 24. Tickets are $10 ($12 at the door). Openers: Erin Harkes, and Wild Adriatic.

This will be the band's fifth show in the area over the last three years, by our count. Either they really love it here, or people here really love them. Maybe both.

Bonnie Raitt
The Palace announced Bonnie Raitt will be playing there June 2. Tickets go on sale this Friday -- they're $52 and $62. The opener is Marc Cohn (yep, the "Walking in Memphis" guy).

The Avett Brothers at the Palace

the avett brothers croppedFolk rock band The Avett Brothers are scheduled to play The Palace April 22. Tickets go on sale February 3. They are $38 and $43.

The band is reportedly almost finished with a new album, produced by Rick Rubin. You might have seen them play on Late Night with Jimmy Fallon recently. [Rolling Stone]

Also: Daughtry, the man and the band, are scheduled to play the Palace April 29.

Tickets for Lewis Black at the Palace

lewis black press photo

Update: Drawing's closed! Thanks for entering!

Comedian Lewis Black will be doing stand up at the Palace this coming Friday night. We have a pair of tickets -- and we're looking to give them away to someone. Maybe that person is you.

Here's how to enter. As you've probably seen on The Daily Show, Lewis Black has a tendency to get a bit upset about the state of things. So, please answer this question in the comments:

What about today's world drives you crazy?

We'll draw one comment at random. That person will get the tickets.

Black's appearance at the Palace is part of his "In God We Rust" tour. Here's a review of a recent show in Madison, Wisconsin. And here's his latest "Back in Black" segment on The Daily Show.

We talked with Black about Albany a few months ago.

The show at the Palace starts at 8 pm on Friday. Tickets start at $29.50.

Important: All comments must be submitted by noon on Tuesday (October 18, 2011) to be entered in the drawing. You must answer the question to be part of the drawing. One entry per person, please. You must enter a valid email address (that you check regularly -- seriously, if you win, we want to give you the tickets) with your comment. The winner will be notified via email by 5 pm on Tuesday and must respond by noon Wednesday (October 19).

Upright Citizens Brigade, Wanda Sykes

wanda sykesTwo comedy shows this weekend worth mentioning:

Upright Citizens Brigade The touring company of improv troupe Upright Citizens Brigade will be MASS MoCA Saturday. UCB has turned out a bunch of now-famous comic actors over the years: Amy Poehler (one of its founders), Ed Helms, Rob Corrdry, Horatio Sanz, Rob Riggle, Jack McBrayer, Aziz Ansari, Nick Kroll, Paul Scheer, Aubrey Plaza, and on and on (the list of former members and guests is impressive). The show at MASS MoCA starts at 8 pm on Saturday. Tickets start at $25 ($20 for students).

Wanda Sykes Also on Saturday, stand up comic Wanda Sykes (that's her on the right) will be at the Palace. You've probably seen her on TV or in movies. Show's at 8 pm. Tickets start at $20.

Palace Theater movie series 2011-2012

We are laughing at the superior intellect -- November 21.

Weird Al at The Palace

weird alWeird Al Yankovic is playing The Palace October 18. Tickets go on sale this Friday. They start at $24.50.

The show is part of the "ALpocalypse Tour." (The end of days involves an accordion, apparently.) Among the parodies on Weird Al's latest album -- Alpocalypse -- is a take on Lady Gaga's "Born this way."

Weird Al has sold more than 12 million albums.

Oh, and because we know you were worried, it seems Al and Coolio have patched up their relationship after the "Amish Paradise" beef. It was so sad when Al got shot at outside Hot 97. (OK, that didn't happen.)

Wait, "Engelbert Humperdinck" wasn't his original name? "Arnold George Dorsey" was his birth name? OK, not exactly a marquee name -- but Engelbert Humperdinck? Where'd that come from?

Ah, his manager. Still. And it had been someone's actual name?

Tickets for Steve Martin at the Palace

steve martin

Update: The drawing is now closed.
Congratulations, Joe Fusco!

The people promoting Steve Martin's appearance at The Palace this Wednesday offered us two tickets to give away. We like Steve Martin. We figure you like Steve Martin. So we said, sure, let's go for it.

To enter the drawing, please submit a comment answering this question:

What's wild and crazy?

We'll draw one winner at random from the comments.

The aptly-titled "An Evening with Steve Martin" starts at 8 pm at The Palace Wednesday night. WAMC's Joe Donahue will be hosting the evening, asking Martin questions -- both his own and those from the audience. Tickets for the event start at $45.75.

Important: All comments must be submitted by 10:00 pm Monday (March 28, 2011) to be entered in the drawing. One entry per person, please. You must enter a valid email address (that you check regularly) with your comment. The winner will be notified via email by 10 am on Tuesday (March 29, 2011) and must respond by 7 pm that day.

Temple Grandin at the Palace

temple grandinAnimal scientists Temple Grandin will be speaking at the Palace May 4. Tickets go on sale this Friday, February 4. They're $12.

Grandin is a remarkable person. She's on the autism spectrum and says her ability to "think in pictures" has allowed her to have a unique understanding of how animals negotiate livestock handling systems. Almost half of the cattle in this country are now processed in facilities based on her designs, which have been hailed as being more humane because they lower the stress levels of the animals.

In more recent years, Grandin has become an advocate for people on the autism spectrum. A movie starring Claire Danes last year chronicled Grandin's struggle to find her place in the world as non-neurotypical person (the movie is pretty good).

Steve Martin at the Palace

steve martinSteve Martin will be at the Palace March 30 for the aptly-titled "A Conversation with Steve Martin." From the blurbage:

In this exclusive event, Martin will talk at length, impromptu, before a live audience. The evening's conversation will be led by a moderator and will include a Q&A segment where audience members will have an opportunity to engage with one of the greatest entertainers of our time in an enjoyable and intimate audience-interactive format. Come with your questions and share in the fun with one of the country's most loved and respected performers.

Martin obviously has a long and varied entertainment career. But he seems to have a lot of outside interests, as well, notably music and art. His most recent book is set in the art world. And at a recent evening-with-Stever-Martin type of event in NYC, he and the interviewer spoke at length about art -- so much so, that people in the audience were apparently disappointed and the organizer of the event offered refunds.

Tickets for the Palace event start at $45.75. They go on sale to the general public this Friday.

The Palace advertises on AOA.

Cesar Millan coming to The Palace

cesar millanCesar Millan -- "the Dog Whisperer" -- is coming to the Palace March 27 (that's a Sunday). Tickets go on sale January 14 (a week from this Friday). They start at $35.75.

Millan has become a huge star from his TV show, books and various whatnot. But we're not exactly sure what "An Evening with Cesar Millan" entails. The press release we got says "Cesar will touch upon his life experiences, and teach the attendees at his live show how to apply his techniques in the training and rehabilitation of their own dogs." Millan talks a lot about "rehabilitating" dogs and "training" humans. So maybe he'll train some audience members on stage. Tsch!

(We've often thought Millan's success comes from the fact that he's just a person who's naturally -- and freakishly -- good with dogs (not necessarily the same thing as knowing about dog psychology or whatever he calls it).)

Chances are the audience for this event will have to wait outside the theater until Cesar arrives, so he can enter the door first. It's a dominance thing.

Earlier on AOA: It's winter. Your dog has pooped. What now?

Kathy Griffin coming to the Palace

kathy griffinComedian Kathy Griffin is coming to the Palace Theater November 7.

Griffin is probably best known for her Bravo show Kathy Griffin: My Life On The D-List -- in which she, well, goes around working as a D-list celebrity (although we think she's at least C-list now... maybe even C+). She's also managed to make Anderson Cooper blush a few times on New Year's Eve.

Tickets go on sale this Thursday. They start at $28.

Speaking of comics: Louis CK is playing the Palace October 23.

Yep, the Palace does advertise on AOA

Classic movies at The Palace 2010-2011

NorthByNorthwest posterThe Palace Theater in Albany has released the schedule for its 2010-2011 classic movie series.

It looks like a good slate: North By Northwest, Bonnie and Clyde, Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid and a bunch other favorites. The full schedule is after the jump.

The films run on Monday nights. They're $5 for adults and $3 for kids. You can buy a season pass for all 18 films for $45 (that's half price).

Tracy Morgan coming to the Palace

tracy morganIn what could be a funny, bizarre night, Tracy Morgan is playing the Palace September 17.

Morgan, of course, plays the wacked-out Tracy Jordan on 30 Rock. The real life Tracy sometimes seems to share a lot of characteristics with the fictional Tracy. In fact, Morgan told Oprah that a lot of the stuff on 30 Rock is written with who he is in mind "because Tina [Fey] partied with me."

It looks like Morgan's Palace appearance is part of a short tour to warm up for two shows at the Apollo later in September. Those NYC shows will be recorded for an HBO special.

Tickets for the show at the Palace start at $36.50.

Lining up for Salt

line for Salt premiere tickets at The Palace

They really want to see Angelina on 787.

Mike sent along this picture of people camped out this morning around 9 am for the last 300 tickets for the Salt premiere at the Palace Theatre.

The tickets were released at 10 am, but the line had formed long before that. Shelley Thomas, the box office manager at the Palace, told us that people started lining up at 6 am this morning. At 10 am, she says they gave out all the remaining tickets to people in the line.

The Albany Salt premiere is July 22. It opens July 23.

Last bunch of Salt premiere tickets released today

salt trailer 2 U-Haul

Will the U-Haul building and other Albany landmarks make it into the final cut?

Update: @tenacioustij reports that the tickets are all gone -- and were gone before 10 am.

After apparently overwhelming demand, the Palace Theatre is releasing its last bunch of tickets to the July 22 Albany premiere of Salt today. The Palace says it will be giving out 300 of the free tickets at its box office starting at 10 am today.

If you're looking to snag tickets, you should show up early. The first batch of tickets was reportedly snapped up right away on Friday. There's a limit of four tickets per person. [Daily Gazette]

One of the big car chase scenes for Salt was shot in downtown Albany -- and Angelina Jolie was here for some of it. It'll be fun to see how much of the city has made it into the final version. You could see parts of the skyline very clearly in some of the trailers.

Salt opens in theaters July 23. The Other Guys -- the Will Ferrell cop comedy that also shot some scenes downtown -- opens August 6.

Diana Ross coming to the Palace

diana rossThe Palace Theatre announced today that Diana Ross will make a stop there September 15. Tickets start at $59.50 -- they go on sale to the general public June 30.

Ross is now 66. Wrote the Chicago Sun-Times' Thomas Conner of a recent show by the Motown queen:

The current tour is a businesslike, 90-minute trot through 25 of her well-known, oversaturated hits. We've seen this before, more than a few times.
So why is the show so good?

She's also seems to have been exhibiting some rather interesting plumage recently.

neil youngNeil Young is scheduled to open his solo acoustic tour May 18 at the Palace Theater. He'll reportedly be playing some of his old songs, along with new, unreleased material.

The Palace hasn't posted ticket info, yet. But the TU reports tickets will be $149.50 and $99.50.

richard floridaRichard Florida -- who's best known for his book Rise of the Creative Class -- will be giving a talk at the Palace Theater on September 24. He studies how demographic and cultural factors affect the economies of cities. It should be an interesting time.

Tickets are $40 -- but we've lined up a discount for people in the AOA crowd. The organizers of the event has set aside a block of $25 tickets for AOA people.

To get this special AOA ticket, call 465-8975 ext. 228 and tell them you'd like the All Over Albany discount.

Richard Florida at the Palace

richard floridaRichard Florida -- who's best known for his book Rise of the Creative Class -- will be giving a talk at the Palace Theater on September 24. Florida studies how demographic and cultural factors affect the economies of cities.

Florida be talking about some of the ideas in his latest book Who's Your City? - How the Creative Economy is Making the Place Where You Live the Most Important Decision of Your Life.

The central theme of Florida's work is that creative people -- a class that includes everyone from scientists to musicians -- are the key element to economic development in the 21st Century. He argues that cities and regions that do the best job of providing lifestyles attractive to these types of people will be the ones that succeed.

We've actually interviewed Florida at length. He's an engaging speaker -- and his work is not without its critics. It should be an interesting evening.

Tickets for the talk start at $40. There's also a $75 ticket that includes a book and a pre-show reception.

Photographers! AOA is a one of the sponsors of this event. We're curating a photo display on the Palace's theater screen. We're looking for interesting photos of spots around the Capital Region. Justin Maine: "So Right, So Smart"

Justin.jpg

Justin Maine, one of the directors of "So Right, So Smart."

Local filmmaker Justin Maine just got back from New Zealand where he collected the Best Feature Film prize at the Reel Earth Festival for his new documentary, "So Right So Smart."

Maine is one of the owners of MagicWig Productions in Schenectady. Usually they produce corporate video, but for the last three years his team (Guy Noerr, Leanne Robinson Maine and Michael Swantek) has been flying around the country documenting the efforts of businesses to "go green."

The resulting film, narrated by Daryl Hannah, covers a wide range of businesses -- from a farm to a brewery to a clothing company to Barenaked Ladies (yep, the band) to Wal-Mart.

So Right, So Smart makes its local debut on Saturday at Albany's Palace Theater.

Before he left for New Zealand, Justin hung out with us over bagels and told us how the worlds largest manufacturer of commercial carpeting taught him about the importance of going green, why Al Gore isn't in his movie and what he and his team have in common with folks like Kevin Smith and Peter Jackson.

There's also going to be a simulcast at The Egg -- those tickets are $18 and also go on sale Friday (the info's isn't posted on The Egg's site, but we called and confirmed today.)

And in case you're wondering: yep, this appearance is still being sponsored by the Ethical Humanitarian Foundation -- the org associated with NXIVM.

Elmo overload

ElmoWe were kicking around the Palace's site yesterday when we noticed that "Sesame Street Live -- Elmo Makes Music" is coming there in February -- for seven shows. Yep, there will be seven Elmo performances over the course of three days.

A few thoughts:

1. As we understand it, Elmo is only three-and-a-half-years-old. Seven shows in three days has gotta violate some kind of child monster labor law. (And you don't want to make Elmo angry!)

2. The Capital Region must really love itself some Elmo. And, of course, we can only guess that Elmo LOVE Albany!

David Sedaris at the Palace

david_sedaris.jpgDavid Sedaris, he of the humorously embellished personal story, will be at the Palace Theater September 28.

OK, so why bring this up now? Well, based on his past appearances in the Capital Region, Sedaris has a huge following here. His last reading at the Palace (more than a year ago) was absolutely jammed. So if you'd like to catch him this time around, start planning. Tickets go on sale June 21. They're $36.50.

After the jump, embedded video of David Sedaris on the Daily Show this week.

Budget will be late, cigarette taxes probably going up, crashing the Palace, big ethanol plant planned for port

Today was the deadline for the state budget, but it looks like it won't be ready until Thursday (maybe). In the meantime, an interim $332 million budget extension will carry the state until then. [TU]

Whenever the new budget is ready, there's a good chance it will include a provision that will double the state tax on cigarettes to three dollars a pack. An average pack of cigarettes would then cost about seven dollars in New York. That state could raise as much as $325 million from the tax increase. [AP/Newsday] [TU]

A car crashed through the front doors of the Palace Theater yesterday. [TU]

The question is not who is running for the 21st Congressional seat (McNulty's current spot), but who is not. The latest to jump in: John Aretakis. It's part of the theater's Certified Angus Beef classic movie series. Yes, you read that correctly. No, there's no beef involved. What do you want for 5 bucks.
